Museum seeks volunteers

The Wayne County Museum, 21 Butternut Street, Lyons, is seeking volunteers to serve as tour guides. An informational training session will be held on Friday, May 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. The museum is housed in the former county jail and sheriff's residence. In addition to artifacts from the jail, the collection includes Civil War weapons, an Erie Canal horse bridge, Clyde glass, Lyons pottery, agricultural equipment, industrial tools, and nineteenth century toys.

The mission of the Wayne County Historical Society, the non-profit organization that operates the museum, is to encourage an appreciation of the history of Wayne County through the collection, preservation and exhibition of artifacts and to disseminate historical information about Wayne County and the surrounding area. The society is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the area and helping individuals explore history and its meaning in relation to their lives.

Tour guides, known as docents, are essential to the society's mission. Tours are given to school children, social and civic groups, scout troops and the general public. For more information, or to register for this session, call 315.946.4943.
