Happenings May 27 - Elementary school Memorial Day ceremony at 1:20 p.m. at the cemetery. History: As soon as the land was cleared, the pioneers devoted their efforts to raising wheat and other grain, and until recent years this branch of farming has predominated. The growing of fruit, especially of apples, was also given early attention. The apples were drawn to Palmyra, where they were loaded on canal boats to be taken to different parts of the country. At that time, the canal boats were drawn by horses and mules. It was not until about the year of 1887 that the culture of raspberries began to be developed. The East Palmyra Christian School's Pig Roast will be at the school, 2023 East Palmyra-Port Gibson Road, on Friday, June 3, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 597.4400 no later than Wednesday, June 1. All dinners include a generous portion of rotisserie roasted pork, salt potatoes, applesauce, coleslaw, rolls, beverage and dessert. Prices are $7 and $3.50. EPCS is also holding a clothing drive, so if you have any used clothing you'd like to donate, bring it to the pig roast. In 1920, American Charles Birdseye invented the process of deep-freezing foods. Marion baseball team defeated East Rochester with 10-9 in their last game of the season. Kevin Geldof hit an RBI single up the middle to score Lyle Lake with the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh inning. East Rochester trailed 8-4 entering the sixth but scored four runs to tie the game. East Rochester took a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh by Marion responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings. United Church of Marion, 3848 North Main St. will be holding a Chicken & Biscuit Dinner with homebaked pies on May 23 at 4:30 p.m. until gone. Give a hometown welcome to Paul Washburn on Sunday, May 29 around noon at the Palmyra Village Park Bandstand on Main Street. On May 7, he graduated from the University of North Colorado at Greeley. On May 8, he started his 1700 mile bicycle tour home to Palmyra. He will ride across eights states in honor of the Armed Forces, Scouting and Healthy Living. He will stop at four high schools to talk about Patriotism, food, diet and Scouting. He plans to return to college to specialize in Exercise Physiology and Physical Therapy. After being with her son, David & Angela and grandson, Chris, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, she travelled to St. Port Lucie, Florida to be with her son Lee & Tabatha and grandchildren, Devin and Shelby.
