sampling sodus Sampling Sodus
By Melissa White

My daughter, the dog Oscar and I went out to Wallington to find out what Sampling Sodus was all about last Sunday. We always enjoy coming out to visit Wayne County because it feels like we never left. There were many familiar faces and many friendly new faces as we walked into the Fire Hall.

The Wallington Fire Hall was set up with booths filled with colorful things to purchase and sample. As we walked in, there was the Sodus Point table and of course a table with hot coffee, beverages and lots of baked goods. Silvia Coe, our neighbor from Sodus, was there with her granddaughter (who looks just like Tara). Silvia just looks way too young to be a Gramma.

We visited with Pat from Bay Haven who we had met at the Spring Fling just a couple of weeks ago. The table was filled with unique gift ideas, many with the feel of being at the water - a magazine rack with beautifully painted seahorses and sea plants on it; a purse with sea glass decorating the front. I did notice a pretty red hat that was on a mannequin. Lately, I have been reading a lot about the Red Hat Society. (When I need mine, I will know where to find one.)

A group from Curves was there with an exercise machine (which they wanted me to try, but I thought it would be better to try it from the comfort and privacy of the Curves Center). Curves is located in Sodus on 47 Maple Ave. The ladies are a lot of fun and enthusiastic about the business. They passed out Complimentary Appreciation gift bags which are always fun - coupons, a sample of a carb-free bar, Body Lotion and a cute little bag of Quakes. The ladies sounded so excited about it, that I think I will check into Curves and see what it's all about.

Sodus now has a really nice health-conscious Cafe and Bakery on Main Street called, The Everyday Gourmet. Their display was clever and looked good enough to eat (but if you tried to take a bite out of one of the breads or rolls, you'd be in for a surprise. They looked real.) In order to have them for future displays the owners sprayed a glaze over real baked products. They had samples of cookies, specialty breads and other things you could really bite into. The Cafe and Bakery has fresh homemade baked goods, salads (greens, tomatoes and other vegetables are locally grown). The items they make are all made from healthy/natural ingredients with no preservatives. They have an assortment of cookies, pies , muffins as well as other bakery goodies such as cream puffs, sticky buns and cinnamon buns. They also offer decorated cakes and wedding cake. They are excited about their shop and excited about the goodies they sell.

sampling sodus The Sodus Garden Club had a nice table filled with gift baskets and many assorted plants. The ladies always seem to be busy planting things in the area to make it even more beautiful.

There were so many displays - everything from furnaces to pizza. I haven't the space to list them all. All were inviting and the people were informative, and helpful explaining their table to people wandering through. The Wallington Ladies Auxiliary provided free lunches to the vendors and free coffee and cookies to the public.

Mary Jane Mumbly from the Chamber of Commerce said that about 200 people toured the hall and that the Chamber is considering making this an annual event.
