Wasn't the weather perfect for trick or treating?! It has always been funny to me how we all take our kids out to get candy and then we tell them they can't eat it. To children, a couple pieces of candy is just crazy when there is soooo much available.

Now that the weather is getting cooler, it's a good time to do some baking. And if you are looking for a special cookie cutter or cookbook, the Apple Shed may have just what you are looking for. The Apple Shed is a great place to do your gift shopping! A fun breakfast muffin idea everyone will love:

French Breakfast Muffins

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (if you have it or you can add cinnamon)
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup margarine, melted
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup margarine, melted

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease muffin cups or line with paper muffin liners.

2. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Make a well in the center of the mixture. Stir together egg, milk and 1/3 cup melted butter. Add egg mixture to flour mixture; stir until just moistened (batter may be lumpy). Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups.

3. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Meanwhile, combine 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon When muffins are finished baking, dip tops of muffins in the melted butter, and then in the cinnamon sugar mixture. Serve warm. Be prepared to be asked to make more because they go really fast.

A good soup recipe for warming up the afternoon:

  • 1 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 whole chicken breast cooked
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 quarts boiling water
  • Salt
  • 1 large carrot cut up
  • 1 celery stalk cut up
  • Ground pepper
  • noodles (whichever are your favorites)
  • 1 can of chicken broth

Take the water, add to a large pan, cook chicken. Once your chicken is cooked, take out of the pan. (Save the water.) Set aside the chicken to cool, then cut it up. Once you have cut up the meat, you can put it back into the pot of water; add the chicken broth, and vegetables and simmer. When the vegetables are softened, you can add already cooked pasta to the the soup mixture. I cook the pasta in another pan, drain and rinse so it doesn't taste starchy. Let simmer for a while, maybe a l/2 hour. Get out the crackers and the big soup cups and enjoy.

Now that Halloween is over, time to get those decorations down and find some baskets to add gourds to make harvest baskets. Any fall leaves, pine cones, tablecloths. Y can leave out until after Thanksgiving for the harvest look. Even uncarved pumpkins would be cute. Real fruit always looks nice in a basket on the table and people can enjoy those for a snack. If you like to string popcorn for your Christmas tree you could be starting to make those now as well it takes a long time to finish them.

Have a great week and enjoy your families. If you have fun things you and your families do during this time of year, getting ready for Thanksgiving, please send them along. It's fun ot share:
