Lyons Lutherans observe 175th anniversary The First Lutheran Church, Broad Street, Lyons will celebrate the 175th anniversary of the founding of the congregation and the coming of Lutheranism to Wayne County with a special service of Thanksgiving on Sunday, November 13. The service will be held at 10 a.m., with a Festival Eucharist. German Lutheran immigrants from Alsace-Lorraine came to Lyons in 1830 and on November 7, 1830 founded and incorporated the first Lutheran congregation in Wayne County. Twenty pioneer families, equipped with hymnals, Bibles and Luther's catechism settled in the area determined to make a new life for themselves and their families. The Lutheran parish has been served by 20 pastors in its 175 year history. Between 1830 and 1850 the members met in a building on Broad Street and then purchased the old Presbyterian Church on the present site. During the pastorate of The Rev. John Timm the church was destroyed by fire. The present Romanesque building was erected in 1885 and consecrated September 25, 1886. The Rev. Arthur C. Sziemeister is the present pastor of First Church, having assumed his duties on July 1, 1958.
The public is cordially invited to attend the anniversary service and the champagne brunch to follow the liturgy. Reservations are required for the brunch. Copyright
