Missing Sodus Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and have plenty of leftovers for soup, pot pie and hot turkey sandwiches. While my husband and son spent the day with his relatives, my daughter and I spent a nice cozy day watching the Thanksgiving parade, having turkey and pumpkin pie. We wrote out Christmas cards, made cookies and watched Christmas with the Kranks. I must say, it was nice way to spend the day. Sometimes going to relatives' homes is nice, though what is up with that kids table? I have always felt badly about that. (Probably it's where I would have liked to be sitting myself.) Now, it's time to get ready for the Christmas season. Al Dobbin has some special news to share: 'This award was given to me from the Senior Citizen Sodus Go-Getters. I had no idea it was coming and , at the presentation, I, for once, was speechless' GOOD SAMARITAN To be a good Samaritan is to be helpful, caring and constructive, to make everything and everyone you touch a little better The best thing you have to give is yourself. Our Good Samaritan this year is Albert Leroy Dobbin, better known as 'Al.' Now in his late 80s, Al keeps fit by walking on a regular basis, doing push-ups, leg lifts and sit-ups. After serving a tour of duty in Germany during WW II, Al continued his loyalty to his country by joining the American Legion. He has been a member of the Legion Color Guard for more than 50 years and participates in the local Memorial Day Parade each year. After retiring from the Post Office, serving 3 years as Postmaster and 24 years as a Postal clerk, Al shared his many talents with the community and surrounding area. He is adept at playing the guitar, harmonica and banjo and is also well-versed with the mandolin and autoharp. He has played and entertained at the DeMay Living Center, Armstrong Adult Day care Home, Newark Manor Adult Day Care, Blossom View Nursing Home and Wayne County Nursing Home. He leads the singing at the annual Sodus Community Christmas Tree Lighting and, for 18 years, entertained the Sodus 6th Grade at Camp Beechwood. Al is very devoted to the Reformed Church of Sodus, where he sings in the choir and, for many years, was a Sunday School Teacher and leader of the Youth Fellowship. He has served as Secretary of the Reformed Church consistory and for 13 year was a counselor at Camp Fowler at Speculator, NY, a church camp. Al is a member of the Chorus of the Genesee and has attended international competitions at New Orleans and Salt Lake City. Al has been blessed with many talents which he is more than willing to share with community groups. He is greatly loved and appreciated for all he does throughout the county.' Congratulations Al.....I hope I have half (maybe a quarter) of his energy when I get to be his age. Don't know what to do with all that turkey? Turkey Noodle Soup - Better Homes and Gardens

A little something from the Sodus Library: Successful Book Sale: The Board, staff, and Friends of the Sodus Free Library thank everyone who had a part in making this year's Used Book Sale an outstanding success. We're especially grateful to Kass Vande and Shirley Patchett for the many hours they spent before, during and after the sale, organizing not only all of the 'product,' but also the workers. We continue to be amazed at what Shirley can do with a few pieces of cardboard and some duct tape! Thanks, too, to all those who donated books and AV materials; the Butler Correctional Facility crew who carried all the books up from the basement; all those who helped set up, sell and take down: Mark Vande, Dan Patchett, Bonnie Bolling, Pauline Dodge, SallyAnn Danforth, Audrey Ferris, Bob and Dottie Hicks, Gib and Carol Sergeant, Chris Maroney, Lucinda Dodge, Jo-Ann Hill, Lukas Hampton, Scott Ginett, Laura Jonasse, Julie Schuldt, Jean Seymour, Jovan Parker, Jade Patchett, Kerri Gee, Hannah and Jane Jonasse, and Nathanael Derenbacher; our many customers; Market Place for donating the bags for our $1/bag days; local merchants and newspapers for helping us advertise; the Salvation Army for accepting our leftovers, and John Cook, Bette Bugni, Scott Ginett, and Kenny Savory for delivering those leftovers to the Newark store. This year's record-breaking sale brought in $1,300.75, which will be used by the Friends group to purchase needed items not covered by the library's budget. We definitely have blessings to count - thanks to all of you! We will reopen at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 26. We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and hope that you are all able to set aside some time during the holiday to count your blessings. So, we have all finished with the turkey. Our neighbors had fun decorating for Christmas, but now it's our turn. There are a lot of fun ideas for making your own wreaths or adding to the evergreen ones. The nurseries have a lot of ideas. All you have to do is walk in and you'll leave with a treasury of things to do at your own homes. Perhaps the Christmas tree farms themselves could be of help to you as well. And begin your Christmas shopping. The days from now until Christmas go awfully fast and, before you realize it, the big day is here. There are many fun things to do during the Christmas season with many more to come. To help you get into the mood first thing in the morning turn on Christmas music, have a cup of hot chocolate at breakfast and just enjoy it. Don't forget to check out the Christmas selections at the libraries: movies, books for kids and adults, and cds. Have a great week, stay warm and enjoy each other's company. Don't forget, look for the Christmas Traditions paper which should be coming out soon.
