Service Academies invite applicants

Congressman Jim Walsh announced his U.S. Service Academy nomination schedule for the Class of 2010. Young men and women residing in New York's 25th Congressional District interested in seeking a Congressional nomination to the United States Military (West Point), Naval (Annapolis), Air Force (Colorado Springs), or Merchant Marine (Kings Point) Academies should contact Walsh's office by November 1, to request an application packet.

The deadline for receipt of all necessary information is November 11.

Candidates must be citizens of the Unites States, legal residents of the State of New York and Walsh's Congressional District, and be unmarried and have no dependents. In addition, they must be at least 17 years of age, but not past their 23rd birthday, on July 1, 2006.

Walsh uses three selection boards to interview prospective candidates and recommend nominees to the various service academies. It is the applicant's responsibility to submit all required information and keep it updated. The boards will review applicant files and interview potential nominees on December 10, at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool.

Only candidates whose files are complete by November 11 will be given consideration by the boards.

Interested young people seeking a nomination to West Point, Annapolis, Colorado Springs, or Kings Point should write to Congressman Walsh at 1340 Federal Building, P.O. Box 7306, Syracuse, New York 13261. An application packet will be mailed.

Questions should be directed to Ms. Christa Cavallaro of the Congressman's district staff at 315.423.5657.

Note, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London manages its own selection process based on a nationwide merit-based competitive process; no congressional nominations are required. Interested applicants must apply directly to Coast Guard Academy's Admissions Department. Selection of Walsh's principal and alternate nominees is generally announced in early January.
