dogMissing Sodus

The weather is so up and down, with hot and cold days. I guess the only way to survive is to keep all your clothes in the closet and not put those summery things away just yet. With the cooler air coming though, I'm sure there will be a Pilgrimage from Newark soon (with Ralph Everdyke leading the way south).

News from the Sodus Library :

Holiday Closing: The Library will be closed on Monday, October 10, in honor of Columbus Day. Stop by and pick up a book about Columbus' voyages. I was informed by Carol that to find the updates, do not read the website - read the blog instead. (I am just getting used to the whole Blog thing.)

Carol put several new selections on the shelves this week. They include:

  • Bait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream by Barbara Ehrenreich
  • Growing Up Too Fast: The Rimm Report on the Secret World of America's Middle Schoolers by Dr. Sylvia Rimm
  • Mark Twain: A Life by Ron Powers
  • My Detachment: A Memoir by Tracy Kidder
  • Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I've Learned by Alan Alda
  • Night Draws Near: Iraq's People in the Shadow of America's War by Anthony Shadid
  • Talking Back: To Presidents, Dictators, and Assorted Scoundrels by Andrea Mitchell
  • Where God Was Born: A Journey by Land to the Roots of Religion by Bruce Feiler.

Stop by the Library or call to have any of these titles put on hold for you.

At the Williamson library, the Used Book Sale starts Thursday, 10 to 7:30. It runs Friday from 10 to 4 and Saturday until noon.

It seems Oscar has discovered (he thinks) how to get out of baths - any dryer sheets that fall on the floor when you are folding the laundry he brings out and slides his body all over it. (Could make you very itchy and is not recommended.)

Ed and Gloria Underwood, who used to live on Sergeant Street in Sodus, had a daughter, Elisabeth Anne, who was born September 4. Congrats to them!

Arborview Heights will be the name of the proposed senior living community located in the former Myers Hospital in Sodus. Sodus Town, Sodus Point Village and Sodus Village employees, along with fire and ambulance officials, were among the dinner guests at Parkwood Heights Senior Campus on Wednesday evening as the pending owners of the former hospital revealed the new name and future plans for the property. Members of the Sodus community were given the opportunity to tour Parkwood's senior apartments and patio homes, and ask questions about plans for the Sodus project.

Arborview Heights will be modeled after the Parkwood Heights Senior campus in Macedon. It will include independent and enriched housing for seniors as well as individually owned patio homes. A large community center is planned as well and will be open for the use of the Sodus community. The attached medical building will continue to operate as it is currently and the new owners hope to attract more new physicians and practices in the coming months.

PEBBLES Cookie Crispies

1 pkg. (2-layer size) yellow cake mix
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup water
1 large egg
3 cups POST Fruity or Cocoa PEBBLES Cereal

PREHEAT oven to 350F. Beat cake mix, oil, water and egg in large bowl with wooden spoon until well blended. Add cereal; mix well.

DROP tablespoonfuls of dough, 2 inches apart, onto ungreased baking sheets.

BAKE 11 minutes or just until cookies begin to brown. Cool on wire racks.

KRAFT KITCHENS TIPS: Fun idea: For extra chocolatey flavor, prepare as directed using a chocolate cake mix and POST Cocoa PEBBLES Cereal.

At the Kraft Shack: Mon., Oct. 10, 6:30 to 9 p.m., fun making three different cards. You will stamp, emboss, glitter, add rhinestone, color and use the new twinkling H2O watercolor paints. $25 includes all.

Mon., Oct. 17, 6:30 to 9 p.m. This trio includes a pumpkin, ghost and black cat, all happy to greet your Halloween guests. $20 includes all.

Halloween Parfait

3 boxes instant vanilla pudding (enough to make 12 one-half cup servings)
1 teaspoon red food coloring
3/4 teaspoon yellow food coloring
One 9-ounce package plain chocolate wafers
6 cups milk
Chocolate syrup to taste
One 8-ounce can mandarin oranges, drained

Combine pudding mix and milk in large bowl as directed on the package. Refrigerate until firm. Crush chocolate wafers into crumbs, using a food processor, or put the wafers into a zip-lock bag and crush with a rolling pin. Combine red and yellow food coloring in a small bowl. Stir into pudding thoroughly, until pudding is orange. Layer pudding with two layers of chocolate crumbs in a parfait cup or glass. Top each layer of crumbs with chocolate syrup, to taste before adding the next pudding layer. Top each parfait with mandarin oranges and additional chocolate wafer crumbs.

There are a lot of funs things going on this month - everything from hayrides, picking up pumpkins, cider and doughnuts. The libraries have a lot of fun Halloween books and movies to choose from and don't forget to check your tv listings for the specials that will be on. Have fun celebrating the fall season. Enjoy your kids, they don't stay little for long.
