'Welcome to Murray Street Station,' said Gus Ventouris, as he poured a cup of coffee made from freshly ground beans. Gus and his wife Nancy opened their new bar/restaurant on September 10 at the former Murray Street site of 'The Rail.' Their story began in 1973 when Rochester native Gus went to Redwood City, CA for vacation and stayed 29 years. There he met and married Nancy. Following a death in the family, they moved to New York state and opened Gus and Nancy's Diner at the corner of Routes 14 and 318 near Thruway Exit 42. In August they closed the diner and bought The Rail, after looking at other area locations in which to open a sports-oriented establishment. 'We kept coming back to this place. It just seemed more comfortable for the sports-related neighborhood type business we want to have,' said Nancy. Unlike other sports bars, Murray Street Station is all about many sports. One feature is the satellite-based NFL Ticket. There are six televisions located throughout the building each of which can receive a different game. Although many of their patrons are Buffalo Bills fans, a section named 'The Dog Pound' is reserved for Cleveland Browns followers. Along with football, they offer baseball and NASCAR racing events. Gus enjoys fishing and hunting and as such, he has already held a bass fishing derby, in which all monies were returned to the winners. Dale Ameele garnered first prize with his 6 lb. 10 oz. catch taken from Duck Lake. Second place went to Matt Reiss, and Tim Cooper took third. Participating fishermen enjoyed a fish fry and Gus's special Cajun Fish following the event. Two ice fishing derbies are also planned, with dates to be announced. Hunters should sign up for their Big Buck Club before opening day. Prizes will be awarded for largest rack and heaviest deer (buck or doe) taken with bow or shotgun. Weigh-in will be at Murray Street Station. A Big Buck Party is planned for January 7. Gus will prepare any game provided by Club participants and dinner tickets will be available at the Station. Another planned event is a chili cook-off on a yet-to-be determined date in early November. More information is available by calling 331.5543. Regarding their menu, the Ventourises say they are starting off slowly. 'We want to learn what our patrons want and get oriented before we get into it very heavy. This is a work in progress,' said Nancy. Wednesday night is Wing Night and Fridays feature fish fry and Cajun fish made with Gus's own secret spice mix. Burgers, pizza, club sandwiches and 'Gus's Not Yet World Famous Steak Sandwich' are on their regular menu, which also includes homemade soups and Texas chili. A fresh coat of paint, a new sign and entry doors are part of a facelift designed to brighten up the building's exterior, Nancy placed potted chrysanthemums inside the establishment and said they already feel welcome in Newark, because one patron brings fresh flowers from his garden every day. Gus also added his own touches to the interior including a mounted 50-pound salmon he caught in Alaska, a stuffed porcupine, deer head mounts and an unusual 'trophy' made from the other end of a deer. MSS also offers Quick Draw and other New York Lottery games. Nancy issued an invitation for you to 'Come on down.' Murray Street Station is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from noon until midnight.
