Walk in the Cemetery in Newark

The 4th Historic Cemetery Walk, sponsored by the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society, will be held on Fri. & Sat. October 14-15, at Newark Cemetery, N. Main St. (Rt. 88), Newark. Tours will be held every 20 minutes, with the first tour Friday at 6 p.m. and on Saturday at 2 p.m. Parking is available at Wayne Warehouse, across the street.

Tickets are $6/person and $10/family and will be available at the gate. Evening attendees are asked to bring a flashlight and dress warm. Tours begin at the Harriet Nichols Memorial Chapel. Each tour will be limited to about 25 people. Cider and doughnuts will be served.

The mausoleum will be open for tours following each walk. Harriet & Wales Nichols will be portrayed by Virginia Minutolo & Don Combes in the Harriet Nichols Memorial Chapel. Roger Benton, founder of the Methodist Church in Newark in 1805, will be played by Rev. Elton Smith. The famous Fox Sisters, founders of Modern Spiritualism on March 31, 1848, are played by real life sisters Karen Vanderbrook and Rita Fay Weiler, and are joined by Leah Fox, played by Pat Gorthy.

Susie Earl portrays businesswoman Rose Williams. Early Newark physician Dr. John Coventry will be played by Ed Pecoy. Scooter Rosenthal plays Jackson Warren, involved in a 1928 triple murder. Wayne County Preserving Co. superintendent Mary Flynn Miller will be played by Elly Dawson. Rev. A. Parke Burgess, D.D., Presbyterian minister and poet, is played by the Rev. Timothy Johnson. Simon Hallagan, founder of Hallagan Manufacturing Co., will be played by John Main.
