Missing Sodus

beautiful mums

Well, the flowers are definitely getting the rain they missed out on during our hot summer. Oscar has a new habit - while I type up the column, he feels ignored, so now he starts out by sitting on my lap to laying across the front of me. I then type with one hand and he's all snuggled up and asleep. (If it was the Boxer, I wouldn't be able to even see the keyboard.)

We came out on Sunday, hoping to go to the Apple Feast in Sodus Point, but it was rainy, so we braved it by taking pictures from the car. There are so many pretty fall and Halloween displays, we took many pictures.

pumpkintown Lagoner Farms in Williamson is presenting 'Pumpkintown.' It is new this fall and has lots of interactive things for the family to do. There is a Mini-Maze made of haybales for the kids; The Cider Barrel Express, the popular train ride; the Apple Sling Shot; and wagon rides with tours or pick your own apples . You will also find a teepee and backyard play area which includes a giant sandbox. Lagoner Farms is on 6895 Lake Avenue in Williamson. Check out

Information from the Sodus Commerce about recycling:

The Wayne County Board of Supervisors will vote on October 18th whether or not to send out a request for proposals to the private sector for the complete takeover of the County's recycling program. They have only heard from the fiscal advisory team and they are under tremendous pressure to reduce costs to the County. In the long term, this will not be a cost cutting measure. They need to hear from you if you want this program to continue as it is right now.

(Click here for your supervisor's phone number.)

A fun idea for a scarecrow:

You and your kids can have fun this Halloween making this friendly, pumpkin-head scarecrow. Just use whatever old clothes you have on hand and your imagination. Here's How:

1. Select a medium-sized pumpkin for the head. Cut out and glue on eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Or draw a face with a black magic marker.

2. Stuff an old plaid shirt with shredded paper or newspaper. Tuck the shirt into an old pair of pants.

3. Stuff the pants with more shredded paper.

4. Place the stuffed shirt and pants on a chair outdoors, in a sitting position. You can tie the body to the chair with a rope or string if desired.

5. Put the pant legs into an old pair of shoes or boots.

6. Place the pumpkin head on the neck area of the shirt.

7. Top the head with an old hat if desired. Tips: 1. For more stability, place an old towel in the neck and shoulders area for the pumpkin head to rest on.

Haunted Pizza

A fun after-dinner pizza from Better Homes and Gardens.

  • 18 ounce roll refrigerated sugar-cookie dough
  • 4 3.5-ounce containers vanilla pudding
  • 2 cups chocolate cookie crumbs or 20 chocolate sandwich cookies with white filling, finely crushed
  • Assorted whole vanilla wafers, graham crackers, and/or chocolate-filled oval shortbread cookies
  • Black, green, red, and white decorator gel icing
  • Assorted candies, such as fruit-flavored jelly worms, candy-coated, chocolate-covered peanuts, and gumdrops

1. Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Grease a 12-inch pizza pan or 3 baking sheets.

2. With lightly floured hands, pat the cookie dough into prepared pizza pan. If using baking sheets, divide dough into thirds and pat each third into a 7-inch circle onto the prepared baking sheets.

3. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes for pizza pan or 8 to 10 minutes for smaller circles of dough, or until edges are lightly browned. Cool on wire rack.

4. Spread vanilla pudding over baked cookie. Sprinkle with cookie crumbs. Cover and chill.

5. Meanwhile, decorate cookie tombstones.

6. Press cookies into pudding layer of pizza. If necessary, support back of cookies with some of the candies. Decorate 'graveyard' with candies. Create peering eyes with candy-coated chocolate peanuts; make shoes, feet, and hands with gumdrops; and arrange jelly worms.

7. Cover and chill up to 4 hours before serving.

Makes 16 to 20 servings.

Don't forget when you carve your jack-o-lantern you can eat the seeds:

Plan on using the seeds from about four pumpkins for this recipe. If you don't have enough, ask your friends to share the seeds from their pumpkins with you.

In a medium mixing bowl combine pumpkin seeds, cooking oil, and salt. Spread mixture onto a waxed-paper-lined 15-x-10-x-1-inch baking pan. Let stand for 24 to 48 hours or until dry, stirring occasionally.

Remove waxed paper from baking pan. Toast seeds in a 325 degree F oven for 35 to 40 minutes, stirring once or twice. Let cool slightly. Pat seeds with paper towels to remove excess oil.

Package 1/4 cup of the seeds in each bag or place seeds in the center of cellophane wrap, then bring up edges. Tie closed with the ribbon.

Tip: Use this crunchy snack for prizes in a pumpkin race. Divide the kids into two groups. Give each group a pumpkin and have the kids race by rolling the pumpkin with their feet, hands, or noses.

Sharon and Bill White will be out of town visiting Europe until October 21. How fun to see Europe in the Fall.
