Happenings
By Carolyn Adriaansen (926.4436)

This week we received a group of wonderful, old pictures of Marion from the family of Bill Arnold and parents, Mr. And Mrs. Frank DuBois. These were delivered by Dick Arnold and will be an important addition to our picture archives.

The 'TULIPS' of the Red Hat Society spent last Saturday together, beginning with a wonderful luncheon at Miller's Essenhaus and then traveled on to the Windmill Farm and Craft Market in Penn Yan. We spent the grocery money on gifts for others for Christmas and on some necessities for ourselves.

Frightening Fingers

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1 teas. vanilla
1 teas. almond extract
2.75 cups flour
1 teas. baking powder
1 teas. salt
red decorating jell
1.5 cups sliced almonds

Cream together butter and sugar, Beat in egg and extracts. Combine the flour baking powder and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture. Divide dough into fourths. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until easy to handle.

Working with one piece of dough at a time, roll into one-inch balls. Shape balls into 3 x 1/2-inch fingers. Using the flat tip of a table knife, make three slashes in the middle of each finger for knuckle and indentation on one end for fingernail.

Place two inches apart on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake at 325 for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool for three minutes. Squeeze a small amount of red gel on nail bed; press a sliced almond over gel for nail, allowing gel to ooze around nail. Remove to wire racks to cool. (Makes five dozen cookies)

We thank Don Leno for his donation of articles of early businesses in Marion. We appreciate his thinking about the Museum.

First frost can be hard to predict, but the afternoon sky offers clues: Heavy clouds can mean a frost-free night, since they act as a blanket over the ground, keeping temperatures safely high.
