'Holiday' - by Mary McDonald

Dress the kids and keep them clean.
Keep them where they can be seen.
Make the salad, bake the cake,
Gather everything to take.
Fry the chicken, pack the box,
Bring along some extra socks.
Grab the coats and mop the floor.
Last one's out, so lock the door.
Each one's finally in the car.
Lucky that the park's nor far.
Now I know, to my dismay,
Why they call it Labor Day.

We've had a lot of excitement in our neighborhood lately. Men, power shovels and trucks arrive at 7 in the morning and start to dig trenches to lay big, new corrugated tile so that we won't get water in our basements whenever it rains. Amen.

EARLY HISTORY - Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

AUGUST 26, 1943 - Marion Central School will reopen Wednesday and the high school will run on a single morning session harvest schedule for the first 10 weeks. My friend, Autumn Kubissa, came to visit me on Thursday, the 25th. We spent the afternoon conversing over cups of tea and slices of zucchini bread.

You know how much I love QVC. Well, I submitted one of my recipes and it is included in their latest cookbook, called 'Family Cookbook.'

Corny Stuffed Peppers

8 medium green bell peppers, tops removed
3/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 (12-ounce) can whole-kernel corn, drained
1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 teaspoon Worcestershire
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
Buttered bread crumbs

Precook peppers in boiling, salted water 5 minutes. Drain; sprinkle insides with salt, then set aside. Brown meat and onion in skillet; add corn, tomato sauce, and Worcestershire. Simmer until heated. Add cheese and stir until melted. Pack meat mixture into peppers. Place in oven-proof pan and top with buttered crumbs. Bake at 425 for 30 minutes or until bubbly.

Marion JV and Varsity Boys are playing in a Soccer Tournament today.
