September is here and there is a touch of something different in the air. It's nice not to have it so hot. Time to have fun hanging up the fall decorations, bon fires, sending the kids back to school and, of course, football. The moms of school-aged kids have been through the trials of school supply shopping. The moms of college kids had thought they explained all about the laundry and then get the instant message on the computer asking, 'How much soap do I use?' Now comes the hustle and bustle of PTSA and PTA meetings, the plays at school, signing up for Scouts, parent/teacher conferences, school dances... it goes on and on. Just take it one event at a time and have fun with them. There are a lot of fun events this weekend: 17th Annual Kraft Karnival Sat., September 10, from 10 to 3; Kraft Shack, 7070 Ridge Rd. E., Sodus. There will be booths set up featuring many interesting craft projects. Make just one or make them all, it's up to you. Samples will be on display. Free gift for everyone who makes a purchase (one per person). Hot dogs and soda will also be available. There are a lot of fun things to make while you are at the Karnival - everything from a Christmas stocking to glitter bracelets. The Apple Shed will be busy with a 5K Run & Walk tomorrow at 9:30. Registration: 8 a.m. Kids run at 10:45 a.m. Location: The 5K cross-country course includes varied terrain through the orchard and woods at The Apple Shed. Sunday, September 11, from noon to 5 is the Fall Bog & Grog in Wallington. Men and women drive four wheel drive vehicles (street, off road or special built) through 4-6 feet ditches/trenches filled halfway with water with muddy bottom. Refreshments available. Wallington Fire Hall, 7683 Ridge Road, Sodus. Jake Spencer is on his way to Mississippi with his unit for disaster recovery. He is going down with a truckload of water and Gatorade some people in the area have donated. (That's great, Jake. The people of the area will love to see what you have brought for them. It is nice to see people working together to help out.) A note from Al Fagan..a way to help the people on the Gulf coast: 'Dear Friends: I am sure that we are all watching the horror unfold in New Orleans, Mississippi and Alabama. Yesterday, I read Wilma Young's article (in the Sodus/Williamson Sun & Record) expressing concern for her son who is in the area and for the over One Million that are homeless. I remember watching the storm approach New Orleans and then curve to the right and thought this won't be so bad. I was sure wrong about that. I know that many of us have taken some action to help and I wanted to suggest a way to help for those that might be looking for a way to give a helping hand. A good friend of ours, Beth Palmer, has been working for several years with an International Rotary Club sponsored project called Shelter Box. In the past thousands of these Boxes have been used to help victims around the world and now the need is in the United States. Each Shelter Box goes directly to those in need and provides critical shelter and warmth for up to ten people. Each Box contains a 10 person tent, 10 sleeping bags, water purification tablets, flashlights, mess kits, etc. The cost of a Shelter Box is $900 and you can send contributions of any size to Shelter Box USA, Box 203, 8374 Market Street, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202. More information can be obtained at their web site or by writing Beth Palmer at Thank you, Al Fagan It wouldn't be Fall without apples and lots of apple recipes : Apple Crisp Ingredients

Send your favorites to me at and we can share. It has been a busy week of fun things... ending the summer vacation, closing the pools, getting the kids ready for school, but there have also been horrific tragedies such as Katrina and what sadness and devastation she left behind. We can help where we can the people of the Gulf Coast and keep them in our prayers. Have a great week and have that sweater out just in case. Copyright
