wayne county museum of history

Sheriff's Week is September 18-24. The Museum of Wayne County History, which is housed in an 1856 sheriff's home and county jail, is offering FREE admission to all sheriff's department personnel from all counties in New York State.

This special offer runs September 18 through October 16. All sheriff's department employees are eligible and need only show valid identification at the admission desk.

old county jail 'The museum wanted to do something special for people in law enforcement,' explained Museum Director Joe O'Toole. 'Since we are located in the former county jail and sheriff's residence, celebrating Sheriff's Week was a natural way to say thank you.'

After three months of renovation earlier this year, the museum now has 18 of the original 24 jail cells open to visitors. One cell block's original shower room is also open. The museum has been collaborating with Sgt. Steve Sklenar of Wayne County to research the history of the sheriff's department and inmates of the jail.

A new rogues' gallery, which will be installed later this year, will tell the stories of infamous criminals and county crimes.

The Museum of Wayne County History is located at 21 Butternut Street in Lyons and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.waynehistory.org
