Rainbow Dream Makers spin a winner
The Rainbow Dream Makers

This year at the New York State Fair, there were two teams from the Genesee Valley Spinning Guild that participated in the Fleece to Shawl competition; The Rainbow Dream Makers and the Flower City Spinners. The third team was from Syracuse and was named the Spinning Ewettes.

The teams are comprised of five people. Each team has one flicker (or carder), two spinners, one plyer and one weaver. They must complete a shawl in four hours, which has a minimum width of 17 inches and minimum length of 72 inches.

The first-place team was the Rainbow Dream Makers, formed 16 years ago. Team members are Bonnie Weidert, weaver, shawl designer, and Captain of the Team; Bonnie Whiting is the flicker/carder; Tina Turner is the plyer; and spinners Nancy Vandivert and Wendy Caffee.

They spun a white Cotswold fleece, which was purchased from Nistock Farms in Prattsburg. The design was a six-shaft 'Huck Diamond' pattern surrounded by a grid of navy blue and forest green.

This was a challenge to coordinate flicking, spinning and plying three separate colors as the weaver required them. The team also makes the shawl longer than the 72 minimum. The colors were dyed by Nancy with solar power and chemical dyes. Tina was fortunate enough to be chosen to keep the lovely shawl, and it has already warmed her by the campfire!

Wendy Caffee is a partner in a business located in the South Main Emporium that is open on Saturdays, 10 to 4.

Wendy has been a member of the Rainbow Dream Makers since the year 2000. She lives with her husband and two Great Pyrenees dogs (lots of free fiber to spin). She works in Newark High and Middle schools as a teacher assistant, at the New York Knits yarn store in Victor, and in her shop at the South Main Emporium. Wendy has been spinning since 1992 and is an active member of the Genesee Valley Handspinners Guild as well as participating in the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival held in Hemlock each year. She enjoys knitting, weaving, quilting, tatting, and lace making. The State Fair Blue Ribbon winning shawl will be on display on September 24 during the Emporiums Fall Open House. Also on display will be a knitted lace shawl that won the Founders Award at the Weekend on the Niagara show this summer.

(The team would like to give thanks to Ernest, the Cotswold sheep from Robin Nistock's Farm for providing the fleece for this years competition. The shawl design is a 6-shaft Huck diamond surround by a colored grid.)
