Potato Fest in Savannah, this weekend

Potato Fest opens Friday at Noon with Senior Citizens Day. Special Music will be provided by Jeannie Schmidt from Cato as you stroll the seven acre festival grounds and take in the sights and smells of a old time country festival.

Michael Amico will perform a magic show at 1 and 5 p.m. At 6 p.m. Scott Arnold will bid off the items from the second consignment auction under the dining tent.

At the Secor Building, the photography, fall floral and Potato-On-Parade Contest will be judged. A mini-tractor pull and horse show completes the activities for the night.

Saturday opens with a giant parade at 10 followed by an awards ceremony at noon at the Potato Festival headquarters.

The day continues with the Foods Contest, Kiddie Parade and Children's Games, Finger Lakes Air Pirate Air Show, Helicopter Rides, Potato Art Contest, Donna and the Mystics, the Backyard Circus, Magic Shows, ATV Mud Bog, Antique Tractor Pull, Potato Wrestling at 4 p.m., Bull Riding at 6 PM and 3-D Fire Works at 8:30 with the show opening with the Flame Throwing Car.

Sunday starts with a Pancake Breakfast including potato pancakes, a Church Service, Mini-Modified Garden Tractor Pull, All Elvis Review, Classic Car Show, the Backyard Circus, Magic Shows and Championship Barrel Racing. The Savannah Fire Department will serve up Chicken Barbecue both Saturday and Sunday.

During the weekend there will be Amusement Rides by SOFO, Children activities, Old Tractors and Engines Displays and Demonstrations, plenty of different Potato Dishes and Food, demonstrations, a Huge Flea and Craft Show. Remember to buy your potatoes to take home with you as you enjoy the Potato Festival in Savannah on Route 31, just west of the town.

Potato Festival cooking contest How does a slice of Caramel Swirl Sweet Potato Cheesecake with a Pecan Macadamia crust sound?

Want to taste a serving of Potato Lasagna?

These are two of the winners from the 2004 Potato Cooking Contest at the Savannah Potato Festival. And now is your chance to create a potato dish to enter in this year's Potato Cooking Contest.

By September 24, create or fine-tune one of your favorite potato dishes. Then enter your dish in the Potato Cooking Contest by 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 24. The main ingredient needs to be potatoes, either regular potatoes or sweet potatoes. And you can serve them as a main dish, or in bread or even in a dessert.

Judging will begin at noon and by 2 p.m. the winners will be announced. $35 prize is given for first place, $20 for second and $15 for third place awards in each category. The overall best dish will receive the Top Award of $100.

The Savannah Chamber of Commerce appreciates R.L. Breen Painting and Restoration of Savannah for sponsoring this contest.

Floral contest at Potato Fest Can you take some flowers from your flower bed and make this beautiful arrangement? Or are you envious of some who has that talent? Here is an opportunity you may want to do.

A Fall Flower Arrangements Contest will be offered during the 2005 Potato Festival in Savannah.

These floral arrangements may be made from Wildflowers, Garden Flowers, Plants, Artificial Flowers and even with fruits and vegetables. All arrangements need to fit into one of the following categories:

A Table Centerpiece, or Floral arrangement (Not Appropriate for a dining table). This contest is open to both youth and adults but please no professional persons.

Entries are being accepted at the Secor Building located on the Potato Festival Field from noon to 5 on Friday, September 23. All entries need to be in place by 6 p.m.

Judging will be completed Friday evening and winners will be announced when the results are available. All entries need to be on display through the Potato Festival and may be removed on Sunday, at 3 p.m.

Awards of $15, $10 and $5 will be given for each category. Register for this contest, so adequate table space is available.
