Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

This week, the cool feel of fall is definitely in the air. Not only is it darker at night but much cooler.

Our thoughts and prayers go to those in the South that were hit by Hurricane Rita, especially on the heels of Katrina and all of that damage.

Along with the Fall nip, come all of the fun fall events that help us enjoy the season. And I can't forget the food. What is fall without the homemade doughnuts, cider, candy apples and pies. It's fun to see the fall decorations all around - the pumpkins on the vines and haywagons.

Peanutty Rice Crispie Treats

Tools needed:

1/2 cup
1 cup
wire whisk
rubber spatula
small pot
8 inch square baking mold (I'd use a cake pan )
wax paper

Ingredients:

1/2 cup sugar (white or brown)
1/2 cup corn syrup
1/2 cup peanut butter
3 cups rice crispies

Instructions: Mix first three ingredients in small pot and melt over low heat, constantly stirring. Mix in rice crispies with rubber spatula and pour mix in baking pan lined with wax paper. Refrigerate for 2 hours and then cut in pieces.

(Great recipe Lara!)

From The Sodus Chamber:

Make your reservations today for the October meeting at the Sodus WCTA, Thursday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. The agenda includes a Cracker Box Palace presentation, nomination committee formation, and review of the survey results. Soup and sandwiches by NY Pizzeria so we need a good head count. Call Mary Jane at 483.4067.

Zoo news: There was a contest to name the baby tigers at the Seneca Park Zoo and now the little ones have names. All of the winning names are of Russian origin. The male tiger's name is Ussuri, a tributary of the Amur River. His name was submitted by three people. (The winner chosen at random was Abby Cunningham of Rochester.) The larger female's name is Anastasia, a member of the Russian royal family. Anastasia was submitted by seven people. The random winner in this group was Don Meyers, of Macedon. The smaller female's name is Katya, a traditional Russian girl's name, submitted by Susan Meyers of Macedon. Coincidentally, Don and Susan Meyers are brother and sister. Each of the runners-up received a plush tiger as a consolation prize.

What a great idea.

On Sunday October 9, Sodus Point will have its 1st Annual Apple Feast sponsored by the Great Sodus Bay Association. The great 'APPLE FEAST' is a Family-Fun, Fall Harvest Celebration right on scenic Sodus Bay. It features the best Apple Cook-off Contest with prizes, as well as the Apple Pie Eating Contest ($2 entry fee; winner takes all.) Taste and purchase fresh Apples, Apple Cider, Cheese, Produce, Apple Wine and Wines from local growers and vineyards. Visit local restaurants and shops, take a walk along Lake Ontario, or let the kids play at one of the area's playgrounds. Visit www.greatsodusbay.org for more information. The event is FREE.

Looking for a pizza idea?

Denise Austin has one for you.

Makes 4 pizzas

Ingredients:

2 whole-wheat pitas (6-inch diameter)
1 cup pizza sauce
1 cup shredded, part-skim mozzarella cheese
2 ounces sliced turkey pepperoni (about 32 slices)
1/4 cup chopped, roasted red peppers
4 teaspoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil

Instructions: Preheat the oven to 400F. Split the pitas in half to form circles. Place the pita halves on 2 baking sheets. Spread 1/4 cup pizza sauce on each pita half to within 1/2 inch of the edge. Sprinkle each half with 1/4 cup mozzarella. Arrange pepperoni slices on top of the cheese. Sprinkle each pizza with 1 teaspoon peppers and top with 1 teaspoon Parmesan. Drizzle the oil over the pizza. Bake for 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Remove to serving plates and cut into quarters.

And there are thousands of pumpkins, all of which are grown right on the farm.

When we came out to Sodus for Sampling Sodus, the ladies from Curves came up excitedly wanting us to try the machines. Their enthusiasm was contagious. I already belonged to the Y and Weight Watchers and kept hemming and hawing about it until my daughter convinced me to try it. We would join together. I would like to thank the ladies at the Sodus Curves. We joined the one nearer to us in May and just love it, sometimes going as often as 6 times a week. The people are excited and supportive. The exercise takes all of 30 minutes with a stretch and you've done a good thing for your health. You use machines that are hydraulic and easy to use. Between each machine is a step to raise the cardio, so after 30 minutes you have had a total workout. From time to time, there are 6-week nutrition classes. Once a month, you weigh in, have your bmi checked, your measurements, and enjoy comparing month-to-month. Seeing what you have accomplished is encouraging. And it's the best 30 minutes you can spend on yourself.

Enjoy your week and your families. Now is a great time to check out some Halloween books and movies from the library before everyone else realizes it's that time of year.
