Organize a Canal Clean Sweep event

In preparation for the navigation season on the New York State Canal System on May 1, and in recognition of Earth Day, NYS Canal Corporation will sponsor the first Canal Clean Sweep during the last two weeks of April 2006.

The two-week event will help highlight the significance of the Canal System as a recreational and tourism destination in New York State by encouraging communities, not-for-profit organizations and volunteers to engage in clean-up and beautification activities along the Canal System and the Canalway Trail.

Canal Corporation Director Carmella R. Mantello said, 'Whether picking up litter and brush on lock grounds or in a local Canal park, or helping to remove debris or restore a section of Canal trail, this event will give volunteers an opportunity to work hand-in-hand with Canal Corporation employees and their neighbors to enhance and preserve this tremendous environmental, cultural and historic resource.'

The Canal Corporation is seeking the assistance of canal communities and partners to organize clean up activities in Canal parks, along public promenades and on Canalway Trail segments in their region.

The Canal System is comprised of four historic waterways, the Erie, the Champlain, the Oswego and the Cayuga-Seneca Canals. Spanning 524 miles across New York State, the waterway links the Hudson River, Lake Champlain, Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes and the Niagara River with communities rich in history and culture.
