Presbyterians going to Mississippi

Member churches in the Presbytery of Geneva are sending volunteers to do hurricane-damage clean-up work in Gautier, Mississippi.

The Mission Trip is scheduled for April 21 through May 2.

With help from an overseas partner, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is breathing life into volunteer villages in Mississippi. Up to 150 volunteers at a time will inhabit the camp's 30 tents, at Gautier Presbyterian Church, on a rotating basis.

The volunteers are helping roofers, doing drywall, carpentry, painting, electrical and plumbing. Lyons Pastor Cynthia Huling Hummel is going, along with Fran Guchone of Newark, and retired Pastor Tim Johnson of Newark.

Folks from Presbyterian churches in Wayne County who are going on the trip are John Domm of Ontario, Terry and Valerie VanStean of Lyons, Pearl and Richard VanDerMeere of Lyons, Noel Johnson of Sodus, Chuck Galusha of Clyde and Jane Smith of Walworth.

Pastor Cynthia will be the featured speaker at the May 10 Together In Christ dinner at Park Presbyterian Church in Newark. She will talk about the experiences of this mission trip to Mississippi.

She's been pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Lyons since November 1996. The Rev. Tim Johnson retired two years ago from Park Presbyterian Church, where he was the pastor for 25 years.
