Clyde-Savannah offers parents workshops

The Clyde-Savannah SIG Parent Group is offering two topics of interest to parents.

Dr. Ellen Arnold, an educational staff developer, will be the presenter.

Parents of children of all ages will be involved in learning how to support their child's education and learning through whichever intelligences and strategies are strongest and fastest for the child.

Each session is free and will begin at 5:45 p.m. with a light supper. The presentation by Dr. Arnold will start at 6:15 and last two hours. These sessions are open to all. Free babysitting will be available. Call Mary Jo Shrey for more information or to register for a session at 315.902.3040, prior to the event.

The first session is Monday, April 24, and is called Helping Learners Unlock Their Potential. Identify your child's cognitive profile (what he/she is good at, interests, hobbies, etc.) and provide evidence. Figure out how your child learned what he/she learned, and what works based on using a multiple intelligences framework. Learn strategies that can be used with your child when helping with homework while tapping specific cognitive strengths. Bring a typical homework assignment - something your child could not do, like remembering a spelling word or understanding an assignment. This session will be held in the Savannah Elementary School.

The second session is Monday, May 1, and is called Bring Your Child & Develop Homework Strategies. Students in grades 5-8 will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Arnold. Students will participate in interactive group dialogues about how his/her brain works and what strategies will be most beneficial. Parents will be listeners, observers and helpers in highly structured activities, but will never work with their own child. Instead, parents will be asked to adopt someone else's child for each activity so that they can practice the skills of strength based intervention on someone else. Be prepared to sing, move, build, draw, listen, think and organize this will NOT be chalk and talk!

This session will end with a homework contract that children can work on with their own parent(s). All parents are welcome to register and observe. This session will be held at the Clyde High School.
