Testing available for your septic system

Wayne County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) in cooperation with the Water Quality Coordinating Committee (WQCC), are promoting a voluntary septic dye-testing program.

Dye test kits and general information are available to the public.

The dye test kits are easy to use and assist homeowners and business in determining the efficiency of their systems. The kits contain dye tablets along with instructions to test septic tanks up to 1000 gallons and their respective leach fields. Observe or walk the leach field and surrounding areas for several days and look for a red color (on the bottom of an old pair of sneakers). If a red color appears, the septic system or leach field may not be functioning properly.

The dye tablets in the kit are non-toxic and contain no hazardous materials. The program is voluntary and you do not have to report the results!

Kits are available for $10 at 10 Leach Road in Lyons.

The Soil & Water Conservation District of Wayne County along with the Water Quality Coordinating Committee offer sixteen programs and services to the public and municipalities. Many of these programs and services have a direct impact on tourism, agriculture and the local economy. For more information, visit the WQCC website at www.lakeontario.net/wqcc

Robert K. Williams is the District Manager; 946.4136.
