Cash grants for community trees

The Wayne County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD), in cooperation with the Rochester Area Community Foundation will, once again, be providing small cash grants to Wayne County's nine villages and 15 towns.

The grants are provided as part of a 'Rural Community Conservation Project' developed by the SWCD and funded with assistance from the Rochester Area Community Foundation. The intent of this project is to help our communities plant street trees that will help to reestablish and preserve the character, conservation and natural beauty of our neighborhood streets. Choosing appropriate trees to plant will enhance our communities without interfering with power lines, roadways and buildings.

The Soil & Water Conservation District and the Rochester Area Community Foundation are emphasizing tree planting in downtown urban areas as well as surrounding neighborhoods. The SWCD will be providing information to all towns and villages that participate, on suggested tree species that are considered to be street friendly.

According to Rob Williams, Manager of the Soil & Water Conservation District this type of project will help to restore and preserve the rural character of our communities which in-turn will attract tourists, homebuyers and create environmentally friendly neighborhoods. Towns and villages should know that many trees can be successfully planted in sidewalk planter boxes or sidewalk cut-outs.
