Mora celebration this weekend

The Hallagan Manufacturing Company on Hoffman Street: the large brick factory was built in 1907 to manufacture luxury automobiles.

The story of the establishment of the Mora Motor Car Co. is exactly 100 years old this year, and several antique car enthusiasts are planning a celebration on Sunday, August, 13 at Newark's Central Park, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Central Park located on South Main Street (Route 88) and is also 100 years old. The park provides the perfect setting for a special car show, sponsored by the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society.

Invited to participate are all vehicles made in New York state, and cars manufactured before 1916.

Those displaying their vehicles will be treated to a tour and photo session in the late morning at the former Mora plant.

The August 13 show will feature two of Mora's machines. Both owned by car collectors Steve and Pam Heald of Sodus, they are very, very, rare and will be transported on trailers to the show.

On display will be a 1909 Mora six-cylinder Tourer, and a 1908 Browniekar.

These examples of Newark's glorious past will join other brass era vehicles near the pagoda style bandstand, all decked out for the occasion. The Mora Tourer is a very large example of a Mora, and the Browniekar was S.H. Mora's attempt to build and market a one cylinder car for children of the wealthy.

Performing in the bandstand from 1 to 3 p.m. will be folk musician Allen Hopkins, who has tailored his program to include songs about the early days of the automobile. Hopkins has played for thirty years at Genesee Country Village, as well as the Strong Museum, Greece Canal Days, and other local venues.

Dar's Delights - Homemade Ice Cream will make their own product on site, using a hit-and-miss engine to power the ice cream maker. There is no admission charge to attend the event, and no fee to display a 'made in New York State' or pre-1916 vehicle.
