Farm market will promote cabbage and potatoes

Special days are coming to the Newark Farm Market, with fun ways to recognize and enjoy two important New York State crops cabbage and potatoes.

August 24, the focus is making cabbage (New York ranks 3rd in U.S. production) into coleslaw, while on September 21, everyone has a chance to vote for New Yorks best- tasting potato (New York is the 6th largest producer in the U.S.). Newark Farmers Market, a member of the Pride of New York Program, is one of 60 farmers markets throughout NYS participating in these events sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension's Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP).

The Pride of New York Program is the States marketing and promotion program that identifies and generates demand for New York food and agricultural products. The goal of these events, said Steve Miller, the FMNP Coordinator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County and organizer of this statewide event network, is to encourage the use of locally grown fruits and vegetables.

WIC recipients and low-income seniors, who are served by FMNP, especially need to incorporate more fresh vegetables and fruits into their diets. And, the Pride of New York Program helps all consumers to identify foods and agricultural products grown and made in the State.

August 24 from 1:30 to 5, consumers can learn how to make great coleslaw and other cabbage dishes with samplings and cooking demonstrations using locally grown cabbage. Children, too, can find out more about the nutritional value of leafy vegetables with the help of trading cards that feature such unique creatures as the Cabbagesaurus and Lettuceratops, courtesy of the national Leafy Greens Council, a co-sponsor.

September 21 from 1:30 to 5, the focus is on New York-grown potatoes. Everyone's invited to be part of a statewide taste testing to judge the best-tasting potato. Several Pride of New York producers will be providing more than a ton of potatoes for these events: Cornell University's fields in Ithaca and Freeville, and Hofmann Potatoes of Springville.

Cooking demonstrations and children's activities also are planned. Information about where to buy local potatoes will be provided by the Empire State Potato Growers, Inc. For more information about Newark Farmers Market call 331.8415.

The New York State Farmers Market Nutrition Program provides checks to low-income, nutritionally at-risk families enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and Senior Nutrition Programs.
