Marion Soccer Club may set Guinness record

Marion Soccer Club is looking for recreation teams or pick-up teams that can roster seven to 12 students in grades 4-5-6 for games at the Marion Elementary School.

This will be September 9 during the Marion Town Fall Festival. Cost is $12 per player. Each player gets a free Gatorade or water and a souvenir for participation. Awards will be given in several divisions, for boys and girls.

Interested parents or coaches can call 315.576.0415 to pre-register their teams.

Tournament runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., depending on the number of teams.

At noon, the games will stop and all kids ages two to 18 are invited to dribble their own ball, (BYOB), on the Elementary School soccer field to set a record for the most young soccer players on a regulation field dribbling at the same time.

The Guinness Book of World Records online does not show a record for this.

Deb Najarro, tournament coordinator, will take a picture, shoot a short video then get all the kids' names on a list and their ages and submit to Guinness and see what happens.

Marion is known around the region for its community commitment and youth participation in local soccer programs. There has been an active, town-run, Recreational Summer Soccer Program for Kindergarten to grade 8 at the Marion Town Park for many years.

Marion Soccer Club has been around for 10 years and places age-appropriate teams into competition within the Wayne Finger Lakes Youth Soccer League.

Marion soccer players will continue with their championship-winning scholastic programs at the high-school level.

'I tried to think what separates this town from the other towns in the county,' Najarro said, 'And it is the long-history of support and participation, from both the parents and players, to all the sports we play, but especially to soccer.'
