GrandSlam Derby awards for kids Wayne County's GrandSlam and Merchants' Challenge Youth Derby, sponsored by the Wayne County Office of Tourism, held its awards ceremony, August 26 at the Sodus Point Fire Hall. The young anglers were rewarded for their fishing prowess; receiving plaques, commemorative shirts, prizes, and more important, applause from the adults and peers attending the ceremony. Matt Zalucki, from Belchertown, MA won the GrandSlam Division with a total weight of 44.01 pounds. Winning the GrandSlam Division requires catching the five species of trout and Salmon in Lake Ontario (Coho, Chinook, Steelhead, Brown and Lake trout). Once qualified, the young anglers can add to the total weight, substituting larger fish. The Merchants' Challenge Division has the same format as the GrandSlam. The only difference is the species; the youngsters try for smallmouth and largemouth bass, perch, walleye, pike, and perch. Jake Neal took the challenge and won first place, catching all five species with a total weight of 14.15 pounds. Both Jake and Matt won $200 savings bonds, and $100 Wal-Mart gift certificates, along with passes from Newark's Showcase 6 Theatre and Long Acre Farms. A total of 52 youngsters fished the 2006 GrandSlam Youth Derby, and the Derby Committee gave away $2150 in US Savings Bonds. The contest started May 6 and continued through August 20.
