Head to the Point on Labor Day

sodus pointWith the exception of a couple of monsoon days, most people you talk to would agree that the summer of 2006 was a great one. The lifeguards at Sodus Point Park would agree with that description and encourage anyone who has not made it out to the Lakeside or Bayside Beaches this summer to put it on your schedule before Labor Day, September 4, the last day of Red Cross certified lifeguard supervised swimming.

While Fun-in-the-Sun at Sodus Point Park was extremely successful with over 300 youths attending, unfortunately one of the three July days fell on one of those monsoon days and had to be cancelled. That wet day had two bookend days of perfect weather where six youth programs enjoyed not only swimming but dairy/cow/farm related activities lasting two hours.

Clyde-Galen Recreation, Ignite, Sodus Point Community Center, Advantages Newark and North-Rose Wolcott, Ontario Recreation, and Alex Eligh Community Center all had a break from their usual summer programming and enjoyed beautiful Sodus Point Park.

This programming would not be possible without volunteers and donations: Kim Gardner-Co-operative Extension, Jeanna Buisch-Council on Alcoholism, Alice Schultz, Cheryl Claeysen, Week of Hope Work camp members, Department of Aging and Youth staff, Norine Orsini-Youth Board, Upstate Milk-white and chocolate milk, Wegmans-$25 gift card, Byrne Dairy-milk, Heluva Good-cheese.

A special thank you goes to Dairy Princess Abigail Andrew and her assistants, Colleen Andrew, Rebeccah Andrew, and Leslie Flannery, whose presentation on the nutritional benefits of milk and how it gets from the dairy farm to our tables was a hit with all the youth.

Children went back to their programs with farm mobiles in hand; their hunger satisfied with cheese, on-site prepared pudding and milk to drink; their energy-level reduced from beach games and swimming; and a greater knowledge of healthy choices including milk and other dairy products. Lifeguard supervised swimming and Moovelous Fun-in-the-Sun are sponsored and funded by Wayne County and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
