Recruiting Literacy tutors This is what the world looks like for millions of Americans who are illiterate. Thirty million Americans can only read enough to fill out simple forms, and 63 million more have only basic reading skills. By becoming a tutor you can help someone improve their reading skills and function better. Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County is offering a tutor training on January 13, 20, and 27, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Family Education Center at 28 Canal Street, Lyons. The 18-hour training instructs tutors in techniques of tutoring adults in basic literacy. This includes sections on how to approach instructing adult learners, strategies for teaching reading and writing and an overview of the study materials available for tutoring. Tutoring is done on a one-on-one basis. No previous experience is necessary. Once trained, tutors have a variety of possible assignments including tutoring adults who are just beginning to read, high school equivalency students (GED), English-as-a-second-language students (ESL) or people wanting to improve their mathematic skills. Tutors must be at least eighteen years old and have a high school or equivalent diploma. The actual tutoring usually involves about two hours per week in addition to planning time and some minimal record keeping. Tutors do not need a background in education or knowledge of a foreign language. LV Wayne does ask for a $15 donation to cover the cost of the training manual. Individuals interested in becoming a certified Literacy Tutor should contact Literacy Volunteers at 946.5333. Copyright
