Happenings Chuck Ver Plank was surprised by family and friends at his home, for the celebration of his 65th birthday (Nov. 25). This was followed by dinner at Macedon Hills; later, cake and ice cream were served in honor of daughter Susanne Milliman's birthday ... at their home on Witherden Road. 'Santa Claus has the right idea. Visit people only once a year.' - Victor Borge Long ago .... The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they kept adding more thresh until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway, hence, a 'thresh hold.' Be sure to take time to drive around and enjoy the beautiful holiday decorations. I'm partial to the Christmas tree housed in the cupola at the Hance home on Union St. that I see from my kitchen window. 'May I always do things that my children will be proud of.' It was last Friday morning - 5:30 a.m. - the ground was covered with snow. I put on my jacket and hat, and Gord's snow boots, and tramped out to get our morning newspaper at the end of our driveway. When I got back to the house - only a few steps, really - and opened the kitchen door, I was met with a blast of nice, warm 'HEAT.' My mind went back to the 'good old days' when my folks had to stoke the kitchen stove and poke the furnace, and we scrambled to get dressed over the register in the living room. This was before we walked to the corner of Parker and Jungle Roads (in Newark) to catch the school bus by 7:15 a.m. We now live in a marvelous age! Copyright
