Book donation drive at St. Michael School St. Michael School is holding a book drive this week to collect gently used books for its sister school, Holy Rosary Academy, in New Orleans. Books dropped off at the school now through Friday will be boxed up and delivered to the students in Kindergarten through grade 12 at Holy Rosary early next month. The students and staff were greatly affected by Katrina and are looking forward to new reading material. A large group of volunteers, many of whom are from within Wayne County, are traveling to Vancleave, Mississippi in January to help rebuild homes that were damaged by Katrina. The local travelers will serve as a link between the two schools by acting as couriers to get the boxes of books safely from the Rochester airport on January 6 to the airport in Gulfport, Mississippi where officials from Holy Rosary will meet them and pick the boxes of books up. The volunteers have generously offered to travel lightly by taking only one piece of luggage with their personal belongings. This allows them to take a box of books as a second piece of luggage without additional expense. Trip co-coordinator, Judy Bezon of Webster, retired Newark school psychologist, explained that people had initially been invited from Sodus Point United Methodist and Caton United Methodist (near Corning) Churches to accompany her and Sandy Hall, both from United Third Methodist Church in Sodus. Ms. Bezon had made this trip last year and word spread. Now there are volunteers going under the auspices of Volunteers in Mission (VIM) of the United Methodist Church from Williamson, Pultneyville, Tyre, Auburn, Heuvelton, Connecticut, Georgia and Florida joining them. The volunteers are all busy with numerous fundraising efforts to purchase the materials they will be using while in the Biloxi/Pascagoula area. They will need to buy lumber, drywall, wire, pipes and all of the little things that go into building. While Bezon and her traveling volunteer companions are hard at work to raise funds, student volunteers at St. Michael School will be working hard to box books no longer wanted by their families, friends and neighbors. They appealed to the community to help their project by cleaning out closets, shelves and attics of books. Please call St. Michael School with questions. Tax-deductible donations for the mission trip payable to United Third Methodist Church may be sent to the church in Sodus. Copyright
