Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Another year, another great Super Bowl. I went with the Steelers and it proved to be a good choice. It was good to see a quarterback that will run with the ball if there are no openings, and Roethlisberger got hit hard a few times.

Jake Spencer says his days are filled with the sun and rain and 90 degree days! Lots of humidity. (While we are sitting in the middle of a snow storm and cold temperatures. I think we got spoiled and forgot what winter was supposed to be like. Heard the snow plows out this morning and thought maybe hibernation would be a good idea. The groundhog was smart... he went back to bed.)

News from Ralph Everdyke in Florida:

'Not too much has been going on down here. We had some rain in the past week and it has gotten colder out again. In our area we only got about 3 to 4 inches of rain, but south of us in Clearwater and St. Petersburg there were some areas that received as much as 12 inches and there was a lot of flooding. Traffic was held up and schools kept the children late until the weather calmed down a little. One of the mobile home parks had water waist deep and several of the homes were damaged quite badly. Still playing golf in the Tuesday League and there is an interesting thing that happens in the afternoon. One of the employees has a pet squirrel and it will come right up to him and eat peanuts almost from his hand. Maybe sometime I will be able to get a picture of him.'

Speaking of Flordia, I was invited to Susie Hooper's baby shower. The Hooper's lived in Sodus for many years before they went South and stayed. I appreciate the invitation, but I think it may a bit far for me to come for the shower, though I would have a good excuse to go South and get out of the snow.

Milk Chocolate Mini Cookies

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 6 oz. 30- to 40-percent-cocoa chocolate or milk chocolate
  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 recipe Milk Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting (see recipe below) (optional)

In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In a heavy small saucepan heat the chocolate over low heat until melted, stirring constantly. Set aside. In a medium bowl, beat butter with electric mixer on medium speed 30 seconds. Beat in sugar until fluffy. Beat in melted chocolate, egg, and vanilla until combined. Gradually beat in the flour mixture. Divide dough into four equal portions. Wrap each portion in plastic wrap. Freeze for 20 to 30 minutes or until firm enough to handle. (Or refrigerate for 60 minutes.) Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Removing one portion of dough from freezer at a time, roll each portion into a 10-inch-long roll*. Cut each roll crosswise into 1/4-inch pieces. Place slices 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 9 to 10 minutes or until edges are set. Let stand on cookie sheet for 2 minutes. Gently remove from sheets (cookies will be brittle) and transfer to wire rack to cool completely. If desired, spread 1/2 teaspoon of frosting on half of the cookies; top with remaining cookies. Serve the same day. To store, place plain cookies in airtight containers at room temperature up to 3 days or freeze in freezer containers up to 3 months. Thaw, then fill, if desired. Makes 144 tiny cookies or 72 tiny sandwich cookies.

* Rolling Tip: It helps to place the dough on a sheet of waxed paper and use the paper to help shape the roll. If dough becomes too sticky, return to freezer for a few minutes.

Milk Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting: In a medium saucepan melt 3 ounces chopped milk chocolate and 2 tablespoons butter over low heat, stirring frequently. Cool for 5 minutes. Stir in 1/4 cup dairy sour cream. Gradually add 1 to 1-1/4 cups sifted powdered sugar until spreadable.

Chili recipe:

  • 12 ounces ground beef
  • 1 cup chopped onion (1 large)
  • 1/2 cup chopped green sweet pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 14-1/2-ounce can tomatoes, cut up
  • 1 15-ounce can dark red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil, crushed
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

In a large saucepan cook ground beef, onion, sweet pepper, and garlic until meat is brown and onion is tender. Drain fat. Stir in undrained tomatoes, kidney beans, tomato sauce, chili powder, basil, and pepper. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Makes about 5 cups (4 main-dish servings).

Crockery-cooker directions: Cook meat, onion, sweet pepper, and garlic as above. Drain fat. In a 3-1/2- or 4-quart electric crockery cooker combine meat mixture, undrained tomatoes, beans, tomato sauce, chili powder, basil and pepper. Cover; cook on low-heat setting for 8 to 10 hours on high-heat setting for 4 to 5 hours. These recipes are from Better Homes and Gardens website.

Diane Phillip's son Michael Scalzo, was on ER on February 2. He was one of the many skaters and sadly, hard as I tried, I could not find him. Everyone was skating so fast. I did, however, recognize James Woods. He was the one in the wheel chair, so he was easier to find. Hey, small parts lead to bigger parts and, before you know it, they lead to leading men. As long as the paycheck is there, it is all good.

Don't forget Valentines Day is coming soon and so is:

The Third Annual Valentine Chocolate Sale at the Sodus Library. It continues today (Friday, February 10), from 10 to 5.

Tomorrow is the The Gala Snowflake Ball to benefit the animals of Cracker Box Palace Farm Animal Haven. Sounds like fun. Let me know if you go. (And send pictures!)

February 18 is the Murder Mystery Dinner at Cutter's Fine Food and Spirits Restaurant. The Lioness Club of Sodus is sponsoring this event to support community projects. Tickets are $ 50/person and are available from any Lioness or call Sue Minier at 483.6774.

One of these days I'm going to go to a mystery dinner. They sound like so much fun. If you go, write to me and tell me what it's like.

Well, since hibernation is just a fantasy and in no way can become a reality, I guess I'll bundle up and face winter again. The next fun Holiday is Valentine's Day. The kids can have fun cutting out small pink and red hearts and hanging them on the windows, then when you come home and others go by your house, it looks like Valentine's Day is welcome. There are the Valentine cakes and frosting to match you can make, some napkins, a special meal, a gift of a small box of candy or a little stuffed animal. And don't forget My Sister's Side Door also has a lot of nice affordable gift ideas and lots of cut flowers.

You can't let a Holiday go by without making it fun somehow. The libraries also have Valentine movies and children's books for the occassion. You still have some time, but it's always nice to plan ahead. I have to find Oscar's Valentine bandana so he's ready, too.

Have a great week and enjoy each other's company.
