Jobe named National Merit finalist
As one of 15,000 finalists, she has the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8200 merit scholarship awards worth $33 million. She is the daughter of Richard and Beth Jobe and has a grade point average of 98.59. She would like to pursue a career in either genetic or environmental research. Merit Scholarship award winners are chosen from the finalist group, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate the finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership and the finalist's own essay. 'This is very exciting. I was hoping to be able to make it to the finalist level. It would mean a lot to win something that prestigious and the money would help toward college,' Jobe said, after learning the news February 7 from Principal Kevin Whitaker. Whitaker said, 'It's quite an honor for Amy to have reached the status of finalist, though with her academic talent it is not surprising. We wish her the best of luck in being selected a scholarship recipient in April.' 'This is a major accomplishment for Amy to make it to this stage,' added Bob Hart, who has been Jobe's school counselor since she was a freshman. 'She's a super person.'
