Newark swimmers set school record

Jacob Kline NHS freshman Jacob Kline was voted 'Outstanding Swimmer' at the Finger Lakes Invitational meet last week at Canandaigua.

Colin Johnson placed fourth in the diving competition with 376.90 points.

This swim team has been the talk of the Finger Lakes East this season. They posted an 11-2 record.

At the League Invitational in Canandaigua, the Reds posted a school record best 464 points - 60 behind League-leading Canandaigua.

Newark defeated third place and long-time swimming power Victor by 80 points, and impressively closed the gap on champions Canandaigua to 60 points (from 210 points in last years championship meet).

A total team effort led to Newark's success, with 67 lifetime best performances. This brings their season total to 489, eclipsing last year's season total of 484.

The team qualified one more athlete for sectionals, Geoff Nassimos, bringing the number of swimmers qualifying for sectionals to 23. This is the most number of swimmers ever qualifying for sectionals in Newark's history.

Kline, seeded second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 free, captured both events in impressive victories, swimming 2:07.04 in the IM and 51.48 in the free.

Newark's other league champion was Phil Fagner, who took the 100 backstroke with a personal best time of 58.13. Fagner was also honorable mention all-league with a third place finish in the 100 fly.

Winning all-league honors for the second time was Jim DeWitt, who repeated last year's performance of second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.90.

The 200 medley relay team of Phil Fagner, Jim DeWitt, Jacob Kline and Mike Chase took all-league honors, finishing second.
