Missing Sodus I hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day. The weather has been just beautiful! I have been seeing robins. I don't know if that means they have come back early, or that they never left to begin with. Since my mother likes to be the one to see the first robin, we'll pretend I never said it. Goings on at the Sodus Library: Are your children looking for something fun to do during February break? The library is starting a monthly series of free children's programs which will feature enthusiastic readers from the community. The first program will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, and will be aimed at children of Primary School age. Martha Miller, President of the Library's Board of Trustees, has planned an hour of fun, stories, and activities with the theme 'Once there was a tree ...' Registration is encouraged, but not required. Call or stop by the Library to reserve a spot for your children, or to find out how to volunteer to read for a future program. The Library will be closed Monday, February 20, in honor of Presidents Day, and will reopen at noon on Tuesday, February 21. This Sunday (February 19) is the 4th Annual Chili Blues Family Fest at Papa Joe's in Sodus Point. There will be winter games, raffles, and lots of activities for the kids. Dance the afternoon away to the DJ Music Mix! Tickets are $15; and $5 for kids under 12. Tomorrow night (Feb. 18) is the Murder Mystery Dinner sponsored by the Lioness Club of Sodus. Someone let me know how it goes. From the Sodus chamber: Next meeting is March 2, at WCTA (Sodus) starting at 6 p.m. Reservations are needed, soup and sandwiches catered by Cam's NY Pizzeria. Call Mary Jane 483.4067 or Patty at 483.6878. Even though it feels like spring now and then, it is still winter. Kraft has a great comfort food idea for you:
Simply Lasagna
1 lb. ground beef PREHEAT oven to 350F. Brown meat in large skillet on medium-high heat. Meanwhile, mix 1-1/4 cups of the mozzarella cheese, the ricotta cheese, 1/4 cup of the Parmesan cheese, the parsley and egg until well blended; set aside. Drain meat; return to skillet. Stir in spaghetti sauce. Pour water into empty sauce jar; cover and shake well. Add to skillet; stir until well blended. (You should have about 5 cups sauce.) SPREAD 1 cup of the meat sauce onto bottom of 13x9-inch baking dish; top with layers of 3 lasagna noodles, 1/3 of the ricotta cheese mixture and 1 cup of the meat sauce. Repeat layers two more times. Top with remaining 3 noodles and the remaining sauce. Sprinkle with remaining 1-1/4 cups mozzarella cheese and remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Cover tightly with greased foil. BAKE 45 min. Remove foil; continue baking 15 min. or until center is heated through (160F). Let stand 15 min. before cutting for easier serving. How about making gooey Italian smores? (And you don't need to be outside for these.) From the Food Network:
1 baguette, cut into 24 (1/2-inch thick) slices Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with a silicone baking mat, parchment paper, or foil. Arrange the bread slices on the baking sheet. Generously brush the butter over the bread slices. Sprinkle the slices with sugar. Bake until the crostini are crisp and golden, about 15 minutes. Arrange the chocolate pieces in a single layer atop the crostini. Skewer 1 marshmallow onto each of 6 skewers. Roast the marshmallows directly over a campfire until toasted to desired doneness. Push 1 roasted marshmallow atop the chocolate on each crostini and serve. Repeat to make 24 s'mores total. Alternative: Chocolate-hazelnut spread (such as Nutella) may be used instead of the chocolate bars. To do so, omit coating the bread slices with sugar before baking them, and spread about 2 teaspoons of the chocolate-hazelnut spread over each crostini before topping it with the roasted marshmallows. Now you can put away the Valentine things. Time to get out the leprechans and shamrocks. The window clings are fun and kids love hanging them up in the front windows. This coming week, the kids are out of school, so better plan now what to do to keep them busy. The Library is always a good choice, bowling is fun, out for lunch, something fast but fun, a movie or, if you'd like to spend time at home, maybe rent some movies and get some books to share. Dust off the games, anything you come up with will be fun. The older kids should have some homework to keep them busy for part of the time. Maybe make some shamrock sugar cookies getting into the spirit of the luck of the Irish. (It's hard not to be whisked right into Easter. The stores were practically taking down the valentine things on Valentine's Day. Whatever you decide to do, have a good time and enjoy each other's company.
