High winds causing damage Record high winds this morning are wreaking havoc, leaving downed trees and power lines. The Newark Volunteer Fire Department was called out to several sites because of power lines in the streets, and other unsafe conditions. Traffic was diverted from Route 31 to Blue Cut Rd., away from the Colburn Park area. A major limb of a large beech tree fell onto a home at 208 Scott St., and did extensive damage to the front porch. Lyons Fire Dept. was called to a fire on Broad St. at the Wil-Print building. Sodus is currently at a house fire on Ridge Rd. A tractor-trailer truck was reported overturned on Route 14, just south of Lyons. Historic Chimney is in Peril- An industrial chimney at Cannery Roll Mall, Newark, received extensive damage and was in danger of falling. Bricks from the top of the chimney were dislodged and caused damage to the mall roof. The entire mall was evacuated, including the Laundromat on Edgett St. According to employees of Graybill Real Estate, owners of Cannery Row, Sessler Wrecking of Waterloo has been contacted to demolish the chimney, which was built in 1923, as part of the Edgett-Burnham Canning Co. Winds were reported gusting up to 77 MPH early this morning at the Rochester Airport, and many school districts to the south closed for the day. The wind is expected to diminish later this morning, and temperatures will drop from a high of 53 today to a high tomorrow of 17. Copyright
