Grants given to local historical societies

Grants totalling $645 have been awarded by the Wayne County Antique Dealers Association to support worthwhile projects of two local historical societies. Wolcott Historical Society was awarded $145 toward their project of rebinding historical books, many containing maps of Wayne County.

Butler Historical Preservation Society was given $500 toward the purchase of a State Historic Marker for the location of Sarah Mills' grave. Mills was the wife of Capt. Peter Mills and the first burial in the town, in 1809.

Six applications were reviewed; this partnership grant program was initiated by the Antique Dealers Association in 1996 to provide continuous cumulative support for the historical, cultural and creative life of Wayne County. Applications for grants to supplement ongoing or new projects will be available to chartered Wayne County historical societies again in the fall of 2006. The Association was founded in 1967.

The Spring Antique Show & Sale will be held April 9 (10 to 4) at the Newark High School, Peirson Avenue, Newark. 55 quality antique dealers and four historical societies will be there, along with verbal appraisals and glass restoration.
