The Newark boys basketball team advanced to the Class A finals Monday, after a thrilling 55-43 upset victory over Batavia. Newark (16-7) started slowly but rallied to claim a 16-12 first-period lead. Newark led 25-23 at halftime and 43-31 after three. Coach Ron Ceravolo said, 'I am so very proud of these kids tonight. Their efforts defensively were just superb. They came off the bench, contributed and played solid. It was a great all-around team effort.' Senior center Jordan Hyatt, playing on a sore ankle, scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. 'Jordan played his heart out,' said Ceravolo. Hyatt was 6 of 9 from the field. Also playing well was senior Scotty Smith, who scored 16 points. Greg MacBride added 12 points and five rebounds, and Pedro Sosa scored seven and pulled down 12 rebounds. Wilson upset the No. 1 Geneva Panthers Monday and will play the Reds on Saturday, March 4, at 5 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena. Newark has won 10 Sectional titles.
