What nice spring-type weather we have been having. It'll be nice just before and just after I have to battle my way to Buffalo to take my son back to school. Although, if that happens, he does have a father who is used to driving in nasty weather. If we get through January with nice weather then we only have to worry about February and part of March. Diane Phillips' son Michael Scalzo had a part in CSI Miami on Monday night. It was all very exciting. While many men are trying to cover up the mark their wedding band leaves on their hands, Michael had to come up with a way to get one. Apparently a tightly worn pipe cleaner on your ring finger does the trick to be worn for at least 6 hours. He also has a part as a skater in ER on February 2. Diane and her husband closed on their new house in Webster on Thursday. Congratualtions on your new place. News from Ralph Everdyke in Florida: It has been cold down in the sunny south also, things have been pretty quiet because of the weather. Not too many people swimming in the gulf I don't believe. Our Tuesday Scramblers League started on Tuesday, January 3rd. It is a fun group and I have gotten to meet a lot of older people like myself. However we do have a good time and enjoy one another. The weather is supposed to warm up this week according to the weather forecast, hope so as I am getting tired of wearing long pants instead of shorts. That's about if for now. (Maybe we got the weather they had ordered. Of course for us 40+ is always great and we aren't expecting to get out the shorts for at least 4 more months.) Carol Garland's daughter Becky came home from Colorado for Christmas, so they had a great Holiday. They also received a 'talking' photo album from the granddaughters - so cute - but she's not prejudiced, of course ) At the Sodus Free Library: Tuesday, January 10: Painting Rocks at the Library. Intrigued by the beautiful rock houses on the bottom shelf of the display case? Would you like to try your hand at this unique art? Shirley Patchett will be teaching a three-part class on how to transform rocks into houses, shops, or virtually any building you can imagine. The classes will be held at 10:30 a.m. on three consecutive Mondays, starting January 23. Registration is required and will be limited to ten, so stop by the Library at your earliest convenience to sign up. Upon registering, you will be given a sheet of the supplies that Shirley would like you to bring to the first class. And start hunting for that 'perfect' rock! What a cute idea! The Library will be closed on Monday, January 16, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. Healthy Soup idea:
Tortellini Soup
1-1/4 cups water 1. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, undrained tomatoes, chicken broth, basil, oregano and pepper. Bring to boiling. Stir in frozen vegetables and tortellini. 2. Return to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 5 to 6 minutes or until tortellini are tender. Stir in parsley. Makes 4 to 5 side-dish servings. And for afterward: Fudge Brownies and Caramel a la Mode
1/2 cup butter (no substitutes) 1. Melt butter and chocolate in a medium saucepan over low heat. Stir in sugar, eggs, and vanilla with a wooden spoon just until combined. Stir in flour and pecans. 2. Spread batter in a greased 9x9x2-inch baking pan. Sprinkle batter with semisweet chocolate pieces. Bake in a 350 degree F oven for 20 minutes. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Meanwhile for the caramel sauce, combine caramels and milk in a small saucepan. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until smooth. 3. Cut brownies into 16 bars. If desired, cut brownies in half again. Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream and one brownie or 2 halves in each serving dish. Drizzle with Caramel Sauce. Makes 16 servings. Make-Ahead Tip: Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. To freeze, line the baking pan with foil, extending foil over the edges of the pan, and grease the foil. Bake the brownies in the foil-lined pan as directed, and cool completely. Using the edges of the foil, lift the uncut brownies out of the pan, place them in a freezer container or bag, and freeze up to 1 month. Before serving, thaw for 1 hour. Cut and serve as directed. Winter is a great time to do crafts. During the summer, people are so busy with gardening and outside work around the house and all the fun events that go on in Wayne County, but during the winter there is a lot of extra time. A great time to take a new class, learn a new hobby, catch up on all your reading and to finish up that quilt you have been meaning to finish or a new afghan for a friend's new baby. I have been working with a project through the Y called Project Linus. Once a month they meet and everyone helps out making quilts for the people who need them the most. Of course it was just so inspiring, I had to have a machine to make my own quilts on. The machine has been sitting in it's new spot on a nice big table, waiting patiently for someone to at least put the thread in it. Something for the new year, learn how to read instruction manuals. Have a great week , enjoy your families and shared hobbies. If you have birthdays you'd like to see added to the column, please send them along to One birthday that comes to mind is Oscar, who is 2 today (January 13). We won't tell him what day that falls on.
