Elks donate toys to hurricane victims

In November and December, members from Elks Lodges around New York State gathered toys for hurricane victims in our southern states. Recent hurricanes had caused extensive damage and it was feared that many children would be unable to enjoy a happy Christmas holiday season.

Area State Vice President Thomas P. Gowan, Jr. of Lyons Elks Lodge #869 led the toy-gathering effort in this area. Elks Lodges in the communities of Rochester, Lyons, Seneca Falls, Newark, Wolcott, Canandaigua and Webster-Fairport all participated.

Vice President Gowan and Lyons Lodge Member Chris Maddock delivered hundreds of toys to the Mechanic-Stillwater Elks Lodge in Mechanicsville. Toys from New York State were taken to Slidell, Louisiana by ABF Freight in Louisiana.

The toys were then distributed to children in area hospitals, at elementary schools and Head Start programs.
