New hours at Newark Library Beginning today, the Newark Library will be restoring some of the hours lost over the past few years because of budget restrictions. In the first round of changes, the library will open at 9:30 a.m. on Monday mornings. Library Director, Elly Dawson indicated that the Monday morning hours seem to be quite popular based on the number of people who have consistently come to the doors to visit the library over the past few years. 'It was difficult to reject people who get in the routine of visiting the library in the morning but we did not have the staff to open our doors', said Dawson. The Monday morning hours of service were eliminated several years ago. In April, the residents of the Newark School District voted to create a new funding district for the Newark Library. Because of the larger number of people giving support, the hours that the library is open can now be increased. According to Dawson, the library's new hours will be: Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. until 9 p.m., Friday hours will be from 9:30 until 6 p.m. and Saturday hours will be from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Throughout 2006, library usage has seen strong growth with the monthly checkout of materials increasing as much as 1200 items over figures from last year. 'With library usage on the increase, it is great that the library can offer these new extended hours to meet the obvious demand from the community,' Dawson said. Copyright
