(Note: A glitch prevented the column to be updated last week, but Melissa's back this Friday.)

I thought since we are right in the middle of summer it would be fun to share a summer memory from the past. This one is from Debra Wren who you can find at My Sister's Side Door on Main Street in Sodus.

'Part of our summer rituals was our Sunday drive. Do you remember when the family used to do that on a Sunday and it was a big deal? We would generally go out to Wolcott because my father had grown up part of the time out that direction. He would tell stories and reminisce about his childhood days. We would drive up and down all of these back roads where he would give you a guided tour, such as, 'I used to work as a boy on this farm and I remember the day my father knocked out a cow or bull by punching him in the head.' (My Grandfather had been a Golden Glove boxer in his younger days and the animal charged at him.)

We had 4 children in the family at that time which would eventually grow to six. We would pack into the station wagon and be gone for the day. My mother would pack up some bread and meat or have hot dogs to cook up on the tail gate of the wagon when we would get to a destination. Sometimes it would be Chimney Bluffs, other times it would be a great treat to stop at Green's Dairy and have an ice cream treat of some sort. On other Sundays, we would (after church, of course) go to a relative's and spend the day playing with cousins while the adults worked on a project or made a meal. It was always a good time. I miss those days when we had time to be together more. We have lost that in our society now with work schedules all mixed up on different shifts and all 7 days of the week. Progress has not all been good. Those were the days, my friend!'

Well as much as I am always saying I want to see the fireworks, but will stay out of the traffic mess, guess who sat in traffic for an hour and a half trying to get back out of it? Hope everyone had a fun 4th of July. The fireworks were beautiful and it was fun.

Don't forget there are free concerts every Sunday at the Sodus Point Lighthouse Museum. Bring a lawn chair or blanket & sun umbrella, 2-4 p.m. Picnics welcomed. Food & beverages available. Free Parking and restroom facilities provided by Sodus Bay Historical Society. This Sunday, it's Fiddlers of the Genesee.

Everyone is so busy but wants to try something new for either dinner or to take to a party or picnic. Here's one from Kraft:

Great American Potato Salad

1/2 cup KRAFT Mayo Real Mayonnaise or MIRACLE WHIP Dressing
1 Tbsp. KRAFT Pure Prepared Mustard
1/2 tsp. celery seed
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
4 cups cubed potatoes, cooked
2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup sliced celery
1/3 cup dill pickle relish

MIX mayo, mustard and seasonings in large bowl. ADD remaining ingredients; mix lightly. Cover. Refrigerate several hours or until chilled.

Sometimes it's hard to know what to fix or you are just bored with what you've been fixing, so it's fun to find a new recipe idea to try.

Perfect BBQ Grilled Chicken
4 servings

4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves (1 lb.)
1/3 cup KRAFT Classic Caesar Dressing
1/4 cup KRAFT or BULL'S-EYE Original Barbecue Sauce

PLACE chicken and dressing in large resealable plastic bag; seal bag. Refrigerate 30 min. to 1 hour to marinate; discard marinade. PREHEAT grill to medium heat. Place chicken on grill; cover with lid. GRILL 6 to 8 min. on each side or until cooked through (170F), brushing with barbecue sauce during last few min. of grilling time.

Happy birthday to Jimmy Malone. (Only sisters and parents are probably allowed to call a grown man Jimmy.)

Eileen Hooper's daughter Susie had a baby girl who is doing well. Her name is Ariel. Congrats. The baby will be baptized in August.

Olde Tyme Country Faire Weekend in Sodus and Sodus Point next weekend. The fun kicks off Friday night. The Bible Baptist Church of Sodus will be doing a free car wash, (no donations will be accepted) on Saturday, July 22 from 10 - 2 at the Sodus Point Fire Department. The Sodus Point Lighthouse will be holding their popular concert from 1 to 4 on Sunday afternoon and will feature an Ice Cream Social and the Music Maker's Big Band.

Then, the Sodus Firemen's Carnival runs July 26-July 29 with the Firemen's Parade July 28. Advance ride tickets on sale now. See any Fireman or go to Jugs, Rawdens, Country Hardware and Dari's.

At the Sodus Free Library

Summer Reading Prizes ( already). The 'Our Books: A Treasure!' prize window was filled and waiting for the first weekly drawing. The library drew two winners from each team, and the winners were able to pick any prize from the bottom three shelves. They also drew one winner from the 4Rs group; this winner will pick from the top shelf. To be eligible to win a prize, you need to be registered for Summer Reading, so visit the Library ASAP! Once registered, you will be able to enter the drawing with one ticket for each library visit, one additional for attending any program, and two for turning in a Time Tracker. To be fair to others, once you have won a prize, we ask that you not enter for subsequent drawings. Of course, you would still be eligible to earn a prize by completing one a Bingo card. It's definitely time to choose a book and get reading!

While the national news is focusing quite a bit of attention on that other pirate this week, on Tuesday, David Moreland was a guest at the Sodus Free Library presenting his 'Books: A Treasure!' magic program, followed by a magic workshop. Everyone was able to learn a bit of pirate magic! Scheduled to perform his show at over 40 libraries in New York State this summer, Moreland says he finds special satisfaction in promoting summer reading.

Whatever you like to do, there are plenty of fun things to chose from and the summer fun doesn't stop there. If you do have the chance, you are never too young or too old to enjoy the summer reading programs at the library. It is fun to get prizes after filling up your list of the great books you have read. The programs are always fun and entertaining. It is a great way for the kids to spend the summer. (Don't tell them it's good for them.)

Have a great week and have lots of safe summer-time fun!
