Newark singer to compete in Country Showdown The Colgate Country Showdown is designed to find the most promising country music talent in America and to give them a chance to launch their music careers. The competition began with over 450 talent contests throughout the U.S. Winners advance to their respective State competitions, and then compete for a $1,000 prize, the State Title and the opportunity to advance to one of five Regional Finals. The last stop is the prestigious National Final. Renee DeRue of Newark will be competing in Rochester, sponsored by Radio Station BigDog 103.5. The showdown is next Friday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Nola's Barbecue on Lake Ave. in Rochester. DeRue recently recorded her first CD in Nashville, and she's a member of the NYS Country Hall of Fame, DeRue will be performing two of the songs from her CD. She will be accompanied by local musicians including John Stiles on guitar, Fud Comstock on bass, H DeRue on drums, Gabe Cinquegrana on guitar, and Dan Bailey on keyboards. The winner of this event will go on to the State finals in September. The Showdown was the starting point for major country acts such as Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, LeAnn Rimes, Martina McBride, Toby Keith and Billy Ray Cyrus. More than two million people attend Showdown events each year at fairs, amusement parks, and clubs. The public is invited to attend the Showdown, and local support is encouraged.
