Senior Corps Picnic celebrates 10 years

The Foster Grandparent Program, the Senior Companion Program, and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) recently joined together for the tenth annual Wellness picnic.

The picnic is usually held outside at the Lyons VFW pavilion; this year, rain changed that plan and volunteers enjoyed themselves inside the air conditioned building.

Some 180 volunteers enjoyed a day of singing, dancing, great food, and good company. Nancy Nealon presented information on the blind and visually impaired and Judy Peters talked about Food Stamps.

'Reflections' performed songs that the seniors could dance and sing to. Smiles and laughter filled the room as everyone enjoyed the music. Lunch consisted of chicken barbecue, macaroni salad, baked beans, cole slaw, rolls, and butter.

The three Senior Corps programs offer a variety of volunteer opportunities. Foster Grandparents provide individual attention to children up to age 21 who have special needs. Senior Companions provide service to people 21 years of age and older.

In return for 20 hours of service a week, volunteers from both programs receive a tax-free stipend.

The Foster Grandparent Program and RSVP are sponsored by Wayne County Action Program; 946.7530. For information about Senior Companion Program, call 331.1700 ext. 2427.
