Peebles is coming to Newark; maybe Secor

Peebles Inc., retailer of clothing, tableware and home decorations, will locate soon in a portion of the former Chase-Pitkin store in Newark Plaza.

Started in 1891 in the railroad community of Lawrenceville, Virginia, the first store sold general merchandise from farm implements to apparel. Peebles operates 170 stores in predominantly small markets in 23 states. There is a Peebles in Geneva.

Since the demise of Chase-Pitkin, and fire at Plassche Lumber, people wondered if Newark would be left behind in the area of lumber and home improvement. Plassche Lumber has risen from the ashes, Main Street Lumber is almost ready beside HEP Materials on Route 31, and Secor Lumber of Savannah 'might' become a tenant in the former Chase-Pitkin location.

Secor officials would not confirm, nor would they deny, that plans are in the works to locate in Newark.

Walgreens and Tim Horton's are almost ready to open, a Wal-Mart Super Center is in the works, a new Family RV Center is under construction, as well as an Arcadia Lawnmower expansion.

In addition, Ruffalo's Appliance has made a major investment to move downtown, and next door, Aaron's Rent-to-Own is upgrading the old Montgomery Ward building.
