One-year anniversary for Nursing Home

After celebrating Mother's Day and National Nursing Home Week during May with a variety of playful, inventive and meaningful activities, Wayne County Nursing Home and Rehab Center has reached its first anniversary in the new facility on Nye Road, Lyons.

The activities continue to demonstrate the leading-edge philosophy of aging that is incorporated into the pioneer design of the new building.

Wayne County Nursing Home and Rehab Center moved from its former location on Route 31 to the Nye Road complex in June 2005.

All staff and departments of WCNH contributed to and participated in facilitating celebrations with its residents:

The Food & Nutrition department provided a brunch on Mother's Day for 65 guests. Menu included prime rib to made-to-order omelets. Each lady received a special carnation, visits and hand-crafted cards.

Volunteers are actively tending plantings and beautifying the grounds with donated plants and annuals.

The week-long celebration of National Nursing Home Week in May included some spirited activities that gave the residents and staff a chance to 'let loose' including a very hotly contested resident volleyball tournament, and a pie-throwing event:

Lake View Heights community residents became champions after defeating the Orchard Way community residents in volleyball.

Staff dressed in red and purple for 'Red & Purple Day' on the week's kick-off.

Residents held a Walk of Ages on the grounds, and released balloons with words of wisdom attached for any finders.

Staff and residents dressed up for Country and Western Day, complete with an ice cream social.

'Wear A Crazy Tie Day' found even the WCNH resident cats wearing ties and hats, while staff breakfasted with residents. The Education Department provided fun in-service programs.

Debbie Langdon, R.N., Director Of Nursing, played 'Deal or No Deal' all week long with staff whose names were drawn at random. Baby pictures of staff were also on display all week for guessing identities.

Canalside community residents played Garden Valley residents in the second round of the volleyball tournament, with Garden Valley scoring the win.

The week wrapped up with Employee Recognition Day and a special potato bar luncheon. Corky and Mabel Anstee held their sing-along.

The finale brought one of the most raucous and eagerly anticipated events of the week, when WCNH administrator Margaret Haroff, Debbie Langdon and Lori Nudd, Director of Food and Nutrition, volunteered to be the targets for a pie-throwing contest.

'These celebrations are always a treat for our very loyal and hard-working staff, and the residents who call this home,' says Haroff. 'We're a family here who likes to have fun, and we give a lot of thought to planning activities that everyone can participate in and enjoy, to whatever degree they wish. There's a lot of life going on here every day and our focus is on making that life full of quality and love for everyone. We always welcome anyone who wants to see what's going on and what we're about.'

The Wayne County Nursing Home, a public facility licensed by the State Department of Health, is a 190-bed skilled nursing facility located at 1529 Nye Road, Lyons.
