The roses are in bloom, summer is in the air and vacation time is coming really fast. It's so nice this time of year - the excitement of everything green and in bloom, the sounds of kids playing, it's like everything has been reborn.

Start gathering things from your closets and garage:

FAIRE Yard Sales in Sodus - Gather your Olde treasures for a Sodus Township-wide yard sale. Sign up as a Faire yard sale participant and you will receive a kit that contains a FAIRE Yard Sale sign, and special stickers to give to your customers for chances to win 6 great prizes. For every sticker, the customer will receive one ticket toward drawings for two $50 dinners (Compliments of Sodus Bay Heights Restaurant and SBH Fairway Homes) or two $25 dinners from Captain Jack's (compliments of Captain Jack's) or two cookbooks (compliments of Maxwell Creek Bed and Breakfast). The more yard sales a customer attends, the more tickets they can receive and the better the chance of winning. Stickers must be returned to the Chamber booth before noon on Sunday, July 23 and exchanged for tickets. Drawing will be done at 1 on Sunday and the winner need not be present.

For more information call the Chamber at 315.398.8473.

At the Sodus Free Library:

June Books-Sandwiched-In: Need some help choosing that next great book to read? Call or stop by the Library to sign up for the June 19th Books-Sandwiched-In; reservations are required. This month's luncheon will feature reviews of Sodus book club members' favorite books, plus a short history of the club. The cost for lunch is $3, and includes a sandwich, chips, coffee or tea, and homemade pie. The doors to the lunch room open at 11:45 a.m., but come early (the Library opens at 10 a.m.) and browse through some of our new books. See you there!

The Library will be closed on Sunday, June 18, in honor of Father's Day, and will reopen at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 19.

Do you have a passion for paperbacks? Tote a pile home to take on vacation, to the beach, on the airplane or boat ride, under a shade tree, or just to curl up in a rocking chair on your front porch. We have literally thousands of paperbacks to sell - they will be 25 cents each, or a baker's dozen (13) for $3. During the sale, you may purchase one of our new canvas tote bags for $10 (normally they cost $8) and fill it with as many paperbacks as you can fit inside. The sale continues throughout today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) will be $1 bag day. Plan to stop by for some great bargains!

Condolences to Diane Phillips and her family on the loss of her father. Her parents really loved each other . (It's a rare thing to find in this day and age.)

This is a memory sent to me from Diane about her Dad:

My dad was known as 'The Lone Crusader' and also 'The Rat Man of Rochester.' His work involved instant housing projects, The Litter Kids Program, working with migrant families, and distribution of rat poison to families in the inner city, to name a few from a multitude of good deeds. The family station wagon was a green Chevrolet, and dad constructed a papier mache RAT that stretched from the trunk to the hood. He would drive his rat-mobile around and around City Hall to get his message across. I was a freshman at Rochester Business Institute at the time, and when I needed to borrow a vehicle, the rat-mobile is what I was given!

Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads out there and, if your dad is deceased, remember him through loving memories.

Have a great weekend. Take care of each other and enjoy each other's company. Don't forget to check out the great books and movies the libraries have to offer. Kids who see their parents read and who have parents who read to them, are the ones later who will be 'readers' themselves.
