Carp Derby this Saturday

Lyons Elks Lodge #869 is the sponsor of the Sixteenth Annual Carp Fishing Derby to be held June 24 in the Village of Lyons. The registration fee is $3 per participant. Fishing for the Derby will only be permitted between Route 14 and Leach Road bridges within the Village of Lyons on the south bank of the canal.

Registration is only on the day of the Derby and will be held at the pavilion on the south bank of the Barge Canal from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Derby will end at 4 p.m.

This event is being held in recognition of National Fishing Week with the idea of having fun and learning about fishing at the same time. The State of New York is offering free fishing on that day with no license being required.

All participants in the Derby will be required to follow the Derby rules, which will be available at the time of registration. The rules include requirements that all children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult to not only register, but, also during the hours of the Derby. Also, each participant will be allowed to enter only two carp in the Derby and all fish entered must be alive at the time that they are weighed in. Also, all fish entered in the Derby must be caught from the south bank of the canal in the area between Route 14 and the Leach Road Bridges in the Village of Lyons.

Prizes will be awarded for girls 13 and under, boys 13 and under, girls 14 and older and boys 14 and older.
