Friday is World Day of Prayer

World Day of Prayer is March 3, and Newark's Together in Christ group invites men and women to participate.

First United Methodist Church on South Main Street, Newark will host the event. Refreshments begin at 9:30 with a short Bible study at 10 a.m., led by Rev. Roger Smith. The prayer service will be from 10:30 to 11:30 in the church chapel.

The service will focus on South Africa and the millions of its citizens who are afflicted with HIV/AIDS. Prayers and songs for the service have been written by South Africans. An offering will be collected.

The origins of World Day of Prayer date back to the 19th century, when Christian women of the United States and Canada initiated a variety of cooperative activities in support of womens involvement in mission at home and in other parts of the world.

Each year the service focuses on a different country; last year was devoted to Poland and next year will be devoted to the people of Paraguay.

Prayers for South Africa will literally follow the sun across the globe as more than 170 nations and regions are participating around the world.

Helping with the service in Newark are Judy Elliott, chairperson; Corinne Despos, Michele Vair, Connie Baker, Edith Benedict, Vivian Krause, Dorothy DeMay, Shirley Kem, Marie Burnham, Betty Howlett, and Vicki Haramoto.
