Canal Clean Sweep planned In preparation for the 181st consecutive navigation season on the New York State Canal System on May 1, and in recognition of Earth Day, the New York State Canal Corporation has announced that it will sponsor the First Annual Canal Clean Sweep during the last two weeks of April 2006. The two-week event will help highlight the significance of the Canal System as a recreational and tourism destination in New York State by encouraging communities, not-for-profit organizations and volunteers to engage in cleanup and beautification activities along the Canal System and the Canalway Trail. Canal Corporation Director Carmella R. Mantello said, 'Whether picking up litter and brush on lock grounds or in a local Canal park, or helping to remove debris or restore a section of Canal trail, this event will give volunteers an opportunity to work hand-in-hand with Canal Corporation employees and their neighbors to enhance and preserve this tremendous environmental, cultural and historic resource.' The Canal Corporation is seeking the assistance of canal communities and partners to organize clean up activities in Canal parks, along public promenades and on Canalway Trail segments in their region.
